Excuse me while I digress for a moment away from the excitement our Pistons are generating for a moment. I am eagerly awaiting the basketball season like everyone else, especially since I live in the DC area and totally dislike both the Wiz and the `Skins.

I saw some extended highlights of Greg Oden from the Blazers pre-season opener last night and all I can say is - look out NBA!!

The guy, if he stays healthy is a beast!! They should just give him the Rookie of The Year trophy now and get it over with, not to mention Portland will definitely be a playoff team.

    Any thoughts???

He's nice and I want to see if he can keep up what he did in college. I definitely think they'll be a playoff team if he and Roy stays healthy the whole season. But I'll give them 6th spot.

Good stats. I want to see him do well... even though he was a buckeye. Not sure why. Maybe it was the injury right off the bat.

I don't care he's a buckeye either, but I'm becoming a fan from him. I want him to win ROY. I've even been trying to draft him in all my Fantasy B-Ball.

I was looking at his frame the other night, and I'm not sure where his body's going to end up going.

He could go the Shaq route, with some fat but a whole lot of muscle, or he could go the Shawn Kemp route, beatboxing with a Big Mac in his hand during the halftime show. I hope the Portland trainers can keep him motivated to stay in shape.

He's an inside presence who drew fouls on 9 different players in only 20 minutes played. For a monster inside, he's in control. Wish our bigs could draw fouls like that.

He's got the Russell physique I think.

Russell and Oden are about the same age aren't they?

    Sure.

    Russell Simmons.

    No seriously.....

    I dunno.

Russel "didn't have an ounce of fat on him".

I put that in quotes because in practice it's impossible without death.

Looking at Oden from the back he is holding some fat and water in strange areas, like the back of his shoulders/triceps, where women tend to put it on. Rather than squaring out at the shoulders Oden's frame looks like it could almost slope like Kemp's ended up doing.

Shawn Kemp ended up being built like a christmas tree.

Oden's body fat was measured at 7.8%. That's pretty fit.

Of course it is; however, that doesn't preclude him from having the body type that puts it on poorly in conjunction with poor discipline.

I would highly question that 7.8 as a current measure though. I'm betting that was pre-draft right?

He has likely let that slip post op while recovering from his injury. I am just saying I don't like where he put the weight gain. Sometimes there's a thin line when visually distinguishing between endomorph and mesomorph as far as laying down bodyfat is concerned.

Does anyone know if Oden is actually eligible for Rookie of the Year? I know he didn't get on the court for even one second of the season last year, but I'm not sure what the eligibility rules are for guys who miss what would have been their rookie season because of an injury.

The 7.8 was pre-draft and also measured this year after the rehab.

He's still very young, so it's not that unbelievable.

Have you seen that reported anywhere? I'm too lazy to look.

    I've seen it reported.

I'm pretty sure that if he had any playing time at all, even 1 second, then he would be ineligible.

He is elgible D4E, I don`t have a link or anything, however, the rule states that if a rookie doesn`t play at all in his first year because of injury, he is elgible for ROY the following year.

There are also other reasons that would preserve the ROY eligibility. David Robinson was drafted and then fulfilled his Navy obligations. Sabonis play in Europe after he was drafted, etc. Scola too I think.

I didn`t follow Oden`s career that closely at Ohio State but did he ever have a problem with conditioning?
