GM Ken Holland: We can work it out - George Sipple - Freep "In my 10 years as manager, I've avoided arbitration," Holland said in a phone interview Sunday." GM Ken Holland: We can work it out | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press+
Hudler is one of my favorite Wings, but if I recall correctly (and I am not sure that I do) he didn't really show up for the playoffs either. Anyhow, I really hope he comes back.
Arbitration means that nobody from outside can make an offer to Hudler. At the same time arbitrated team is obliged to accept everything what "judge" decides. Did not expect to have cap space for keeping all UFAs Hossa, Hudler, Samuelsson. Hoped that they can keep either Hudler or Samuelsson, so everything is going that way.
Samuelsson's a Canuck as of Yesterday Morning Rax, Samuelsson agreed to a three-year NHL deal for $7.5 million with Vancouver.. Samuelsson: More than money attracted me to Vancouver | Sporting News I'm pretty sure Hudler can still walk away after arbitration and become an unrestricted free agent. He can reject the arbitration salary amount if he so chooses. He just can't negotiate with any other teams until the arbitration period ends..right?
Wings may not have enough under the cap to sign Hudler after the arbitrator determines the salary. That is the problem. They may have to do some trading from the unfavorable position as other managers will know that Wings will have to trade people to get under the cap.

Full boat for depreciated assets? Snapshots at Mlive Asking fans to pay full price to watch weakened teams if cap declines is nonsensical Posted by George James Malik July 06, 2009 "I do not believe that the NHL's teams or players should simply allow the salary cap to decrease by the purported $5-7 million which North America's economic issues seem to have guaranteed for the 2010-2011 season. Such a decline would trigger a league-wide sell-off of elite players" Asking fans to pay full price to watch weakened teams if cap declines is nonsensical - Snapshots
You can always tell people who know nothing about business. They assume that things are "allowed" to happen, and not a condition of the market and balance sheet. Basically, he's saying the NHL should bail out salaries. In a league that is already financially weak, and that the owners took a beating over in order to establish a cap, specifically for this instance, ugh. It's hard to read sports writers on economic issues, because they are so clueless about the reality of business. If the NHL's revenues are shrinking, they will have to consume their capital stock to prop up the cap. That means they will have to cannibalize their own operations by diverting money from other areas necessary to maintain the team, exclusively to salaries. That is not sustainable, and ultimately, catastrophic.
lets's speculate that Leino will produce( he is not straight shooter,, though, he is more around the cage skater and puck battler for garbage goals) similarly to Samuelsson: 20+20 per reg season and all this 800K per season. There are plenty of minutes for him anyway: due to capp spayce Holland can't scrape full roster together ( 21-22 instead of normal 24)
Leino has pretty good hands and protected puck and skated OK ( considering he had to adjust with NHL speed), so he hopefully gets his goals due to agility.( during his short trip to wings last year 10 games or so he already scored several times).
Well, so much for Hudler being a wing: Jiri Hudler signs with Russian team, won't play for Wings | detnews.com | The Detroit News It's all about $$$.
Red Wings retains his player rights in NHL, so expect Hudler to be back once salary cap starts growing. Hudler very clearly stated ...I did not want to sign with any other NHL team.
Salary cap is not going to be growing anytime soon. However, I don't expect Saint Nick to keep playing forever, so his $7 mln or so will come off the payroll in a couple of years or so. I don't think Homer has much left, the same for Drapes and Malts. So there should be some money available.
