RETiRED OR FIRED, Jim Leyland will have a 11AM press conference to announce his leaving The Tigers. You can go to ESPN, MLB or 97.1 The Ticket for live coverage.

I don't think it's a firing. Leyland talked about the weight of expectations this team had coming out of spring training. He probably does not want to have to deal with the media and fickle fans of Detroit anymore.

He did a great job of leading the team consistently into the playoffs. I just don't think he's the guy for the future. Clearly, he doesn't either.

Someone needs to edit this to the official Jim Leyland Appreciation thread?

If so thanks for the memories....you took us a little further than Flip Saunders did, but still no cigar, only a bunch of cigarettes that made you look 20 years older than me instead of just 10.

I still blame some of the issues on the coaches that you surrounded yourself with and your old school tendencies. But alas you got us excited the last three seasons while the Pistons were going through their rebuilding, so thanks a lot buddy and we will see you in the box sitting next to Al Kaline.

I don't doubt Wiggles had a hand in this....he probably talked to Jim in a dream sequence and told Jim to get the ell out of town.

So Jim told his wife , Gene Lamont and Tony Larusso. And of course he told Dom and Dom told Illitch.

He kept saying though that travel and stress were the key indicators of him leaving and with all respect to the Red Sox, the Tigers should be in the world series, but Fielder, we let this one get away from us.

Tony La Russa's name being thrown around this evening. Supposedly, he has a good relationship with Dombrowski.

    Mattingly?

    Thanks for the memories, Jim

Appreciated. He may just be getting too old for the grind. I could imagine him stepping down even if they would have won it all. I have no real opinion on this, but secretly hoping for more of a modern sabermetrics type guy... problem is that there's a huge social, locker room component that those guys probably stink at (Jonah hill type guys).
