Joe Dumars: Madman or Genius? | Bleacher Report
Article talks about Joe's great moves, his mistakes, and his latest moves of hiring a rookie coach, drafting Sharpe, and signing Brown.

So, has Joe really lost his touch or is he still the guy that should be in charge?

I say he'll keep Pistons in contention.

Not really sure that being a genius would even help in the GM business.

I voted great also. I think the cheapness stems from ownership and not him. Maybe they'd have more $$ to spend if he wasn't always talking on the phone at the games?

when people bring up bad GM moves by Dumars I don't understand how signing Brown for the MLE makes him a madman.

    Bad moves = Darko, Nazr

BAd GM's tend to get stuck with players/ salaries that bring down their teams.

Joe was able to trade his mistakes and recovered most of the value.

And overall, the performance of the Pistons since he took over has been unbelievably good.

Everyone always slams Joe D for drafting Darko. I always felt that it was a little unfair. There is no doubt that Darko proved over the years that he was not worth the #2 overall pick, but just about every NBA team had Darko ranked there behind King James. Joe D was just the unfortunate guy that happened to have that pick.

It would have been very Dumars-like to pass on Darko and surprise everyone with Bosh at #2. Live and learn.

Simple test. Is Brown (Kwame) in any way worth 8 million? No.

Must add that kiki Vanderweghe (Denver GM) offered for 2nd pick their 3rd plus one player from Denver roster - just take.

This whine ohwhynotbosh is extremely annoying.

I think he is a good GM not great. I think Joe is handycapped with Bill Davidson holding the purse strings tight. With that said, I think alot of his moves are very suspect lately which has hurt his ranking. If you simply look at winning regular season games then he is a great GM, but if it truly about winning championships then he is just a good GM as he has no address the team needs to get them over the hump to win another title.

In terms of winning championships, which current GM's are better than Joe? IOW, who has won more Ships than Joe since he took his current position?

The Spurs GM has more championships and always seems to find talent that can help the team with those low 1st round draft picks.

I think Joe is in the top three GM's in the NBA. I just don't think he is great. The team has faltered 3 years in a row and he has done nothing to improve them talent wise.

I think almost any GM that wins a championship has to be a genius. Especially without paying lux tax to do so.

    1. True centers that can move are worth something. There will always be a place for them in this league and 4 mil a year is not the end of the world, no matter how much of a giant turd he may be.

    2. Its not like we're spending he money on anybody else:ohwell:

I think everyone needs to give Brown a chance. Let's see him play about 40 games before we label this signing a dud. Are we going to treat him like Washington & L.A. did. Come on we're better fans then them aren't we?

Sooooo if we kiss his butt he'll play better? :pound:

I get what you're saying...but Piston fans owe him nothing more than reserving judgment. I'd like to see the rest of his contract...which brings up a question to those with CBA-smarts. Are incentive clauses allowed?

Joe is 50% genius/50% I don't know what the heck he is thinking (IDKWTHHIT).

I'll give Joe a pass on drafting; he's generally grabbed the best player available, and considering Darko's hype, this wasn't completely Joe's fault. Same with RW, whom Joe got rid of as soon as he saw how bad he was.

Joe made great decisions regarding players on other teams like trading Stack for Rip, the Sheed deal, going after CB, getting Big Ben instead of nothing for GHill.

But he has made horrific decisions by not pressuring coaches to play guys who could play. Okur, borderline allstar center was behind Darvin Hamm on the depth chart. Carlos Delfino got zip from two coaches, though he was better than both guys ahead him. And as much as I dislike MoEvans, he is still better than the scrubs brought in to replace him.

Since Joe's last great move of getting Sheed, he's brought in Derrick Coleman, Tony Delk, Super Dupe, Arroyo, Flip Jr., Nazr, and now Kwame. Until Joe makes that next great trade, or signs that next great FA, Joe is a good GM who once was great, and is on his way to being passed his time.
