Hi all: Since I am here at Ohare Airport waiting on my flight, I was able to listen to the entire Dumar's press conference and jotted down his comments; Listed b elow are his comments: 1. During the season the team looked like it was not on the same page and at times looked scattered. 2. The coaching decision will not be a long drawn out process, he will act as soon as possible on announcing the new coach. 3. I am looking for one good player. 4. I will make a significant change to the team (you damn right I will was his exact reply when the reporter asked Joe this question) 5. Will not rip or gut the entire team. 6. Flip did not get it done this year and I refuse to listen to any excuses this year. 7. To say "we are not good enough" is a farce 8. There are no "sacred cows" as far as the team goes when it comes to who to trade. Every player loss their "sacred cow" status 9. The last 10 minutes of the game was a micorcosm of the last 3 years. 10. I had a sense of calm as I walked out the Palace after game 6 of the Boston series. I said to myself "I have seen enough". 11. I have had no player calls yet, only coach calls 12. I am confident that I will get that special player, a certain type of player with: a) Major talent b) motivated c) attitudinal d) One will get the job done 13. If I can swing a deal, I will (said emphatically) 14. Not zeroed in on any one particular player 15. I would like to change the core player(s) and am very open to doing this 16. I very high on Stuckey and Amir 17. I reminded the guys to get it done all during the season 18. The team became way too content and did not show a sense of urgency 19. As I watched the the four playoff teams, I watched the San An/Lakers, Boston/Cleve series, those guys were playing hard, these teams were going at it, and us, we were not playing hard, that's when I said "I have seen enough". I couldn't hear the question that someone asked about Rasheed, however, I must say that I can deduce from this interview that Sheed is long gone.
thanks for the post. I expected to be alot happier about this then i am (Flip stuff), but it's bittersweet since he never should have been hired in the 1st place, and i feel like he wasted the championship window of this core.
Thanks for the post. Did you get the impression that Joe will add only one major new face to the team? What did he mean by 1-Major player is he looking for a superstar and ditching the team concept?
I'm not sure everything we seem to think of as obvious is all that clear in hindsight. The big changes this year were moving Dice into the starting lineup and integrating some young guys off the bench, and it's pretty clear that the team did improve as a result (though not enough). In retrospect, perhaps going in that direction would have been the right thing to do immediately after Ben's departure, as opposed to the unsuccessful attempted stop-gap of Nazr/CWebb in the middle. Maybe that would have been enough of a change to get back to the top with these core guys, maybe not. In any event, more changes than that will have to be made at this point.
Thanks Army Told yah he was pissed just like us. I can get this forum on my Blackberry and you got to think that when he was peeking at his during the games he was reading our comments...if he has the talent to get to the finals ,but his coach can't get there, then he was expendable. No adjustments> no job
The team improved tremendously (although i still think Max starting was the more successful option). The problem was in the PO's Flip abadoned it all.
It was difficult to ascertain from Dumars remarks as far as how many core players that he was willing to give up, he did say he would not gut the team. He kept mentioning significant changes
They didn't play hard and looks like didn't play together. They have enough talent to take it all, but they didn't want to do what it takes and Flip couldn't motivate them. Hence, here we are. But it does sound as if Joe is majorly pissed off. I can understand why he wasn't in a hurry to make drastic moves before. He is a guy that will give people second chances - look at Chauncey, Ben, etc. and he's not quick to jump the gun. I can certainly respect that.
The biggest change from the last few summers is now, Joe wants to break up the core. In his words, "a major portion of the core". That's not just Rasheed. That might not even be just Rasheed and Tayshaun. I think bare minimum Sheed and one other of Tayshaun, Chauncey, or Rip.
I think that Tay was indirectly called out before. He's an interesting case coming in into the NBA and having success right away. Is that what's made him content?
