Josh Smith attempts 7 3's a game; only 4 player attempt more. At the same time, all of these shoot significantly better (the lowest being Jameer Nelson who makes 32,1%) as he only hits 25% of these. Kevin Love, who also attempts 7 threes, is also in J Smooth territory (28,6%). So is Harden (6.8 attempts, while making 26,5). Also, Durant attempts 6 3s and is also below 30%.
Which begs the question: will the Pistons keep allowing him to shoot 3s at such a ridiculous rate and with such a painfully low %? Or will the coach try to lower his FGAs? Should he?

I like those threes when he makes them. He just needs to make more.
Once we replace some guys in the lineup with some dudes who can drain threes (Pope & Pizza Guy), we won't need Smith to take as many.

SOMEBODY on this team needs to spread the floor.

Of all PF's currently on an NBA roster who own at least one Bentley and one Ferrari with custom floor mats, only two, LeBron James and Charlie Villanueva shot better than 30% from 3 point range during the week of February 7-14, 2011. Charlie had his best shooting night on the 14th, making 4 of 10 attempts to lead the Pistons to a Garbage Time Near Comeback against the Houston Rockets. Fans refer to this near victory as the Valentine's Day Massacre.

Charlie Villanueva and LeBron James. Not bad company.

He makes the Pistons a lot better but I cringe every time he shoots a 3 because it's either he makes it or he misses the net completely :faint: I think so long as he shoots it in the flow of the game then it's fine. His game against the Celtics was a good example.

    Agree.
As long as the flow of the game doesn't include taking threes with 20 seconds left on the shot clock, I'm down.

There were some ugly threes from Josh last night. The one that completely missed....it seems like if a player shooting that poorly, he would give up the long shots and take it to the hoop. How do you keep shooting when you're not even close? It's like he gets in "the zone" in reverse.

I think that 7 blocks by Hibbert had something to do with Josh shooting from outside instead of taking it to the hoop.

Good point, but I'd rather keep hammering in the post than missing the entire basket on three point shots. Monroe kept hammering and he had some success.

Josh's 'take it to the hoop' game is kinda dicey.
He's good once he's at the hoop but getting there is a problem for him.

The thing that worked great every time the team tried it is this:
-Smith gets the ball around the 3 pt line on the wing.
-We clear that side to set up an ISO play for Smith.
-He takes his defender off the dribble and drives hard to the basket.
-A big comes over to help and/or block the shot.
-Smith passes the ball to Dre for an easy dunk or Moose for an easy and-1 that never was.

This scheme worked every single time. We need to do more of it.

God, I wish he would just shut up and play. The worst is when he calls it, misses the shot and doesn't even get the foul.

Datome is also a shooter. So is jorts. We just need to keep Smith mainly at pf with some limited sf action against big opponents.

For his career, Smith averages 1.4 3-point attempts per game.

Last year, Smith was at a career high of 2.6 3-point attempts per game.

With the Pistons in 4 games, Smith is averaging 7.0 3-point attempts per game.

I think all of these attempts is an anomaly/fluke/etc. He will eventually get it back down to the 2-to-3 attempts per game.
