    Juggling the numbers...Top 6 teams... 12.23.05
    [IMG]

Juggling the numbers the 2nd time around..Last time we did it the team was 6 games in back on 11.14.05. This time, 17 games later, we'll run the same categories. Then I'll include some personal observations for color and starting arguments..:boxing:

    Team Scoring, Pistons are ranked 5th knocking down 99.9 per outing. #1, Philly 102.7, #2, Cavs 102.5, #3, Suns 102.3, #4 Sonics 100.9 #6 Wiz 99.8

Last time around the Pistons were 6th at 100.7, that means with all the D "adjustments" by other teams we've only wavered by .8 ppg, OUTSTANDING. The Bucks were ranked 2nd in November at 107 ppg but have fallen out'a the top 6 to #12, 97.7 pg, that's a hefty 10 ppg swing, OUCH.

Team Defense, The Pistons have slipped a bit, must be all that vacationing outside the box we've been seeing. They're now #8 holding teams to 91.6. #1 Grizz 86.0, #2 Pacers 88.7, #3 Wolves 88.8, #4 Rockets 89.4, #5 Spurs 90.6, #6 Jazz 91.1..

Last time around the Pistons were #1 at 87.7. That's a 2 basket a game difference. Can't say that isn't a concern, adjust the number w/the -.8 in scoring and the differential over 17 games is -4.7 ppg.

    Team Scoring Differential, Good news, Pistons are #1 at +8.3 a game. #2 Suns 6.6, #3 Spurs 6.3, #4 Pacers 5.0, #5 Cavs 4.6, #6 Mavs 4.2.

Detroit was #1 in November with a gaudy +13. The Wiz were right behind us then at 12.2 they've fallen to #16 w/ a current .0, talk about playing above the rim! Apparently that high altitude oxygen deprivation sucked the wind right out'a them..

    Team FG% Differential, We're now ranked 9th at .016. #1 Spurs .054, #2 Wolves .035, #3 Pacers .033, #4 Clips .033, #5 Suns .030, #6 Heat .026.

In November we were 3rd at .040. We came back down to Earth for a visit. Where's Hunter when you need him? This says we play closer than we should based on our current record.

    Team FG%, Detroit is #5, knocking down a nice .462% of their shots. #1 Spurs .477, #2 Kings .465, #3 Philly .463, #4 Mavs .463 and #6 Wolves .462.

In November we were on top, #1 at dropping the rock, a sizzling .486. The surprise here? The Kings. For all the talk about their fall from grace they still can make string music with the best of them (at least through today)..

    Team FT%, Deeetroit .756 = #10-huh? #1 the Mighty Clips at .792, #2 Suns .787, #3 Sonics .786, #4 Kings .785, #5 Cavs .783 and #6 Raptors .781.

The Pistons were 6th last time around at .774. This one could creep up on us and beat us about the head and shoulders. We have to make gravy at the charity stripe. Note that 4 of the top 6 are western teams.

Team 3PT%, This is why were winning folks. The Pistons are numero uno in this category (also known as the kick-in-the-nads stat). They're hitting a whopping .415%. #2 baby Bulls .409, #3 Bucks .405, #4 Hawks .401, #5 Magic .390 and finally #6 Philly .387..

The East owns da Bomb. Amazingly, none of the 6 here could crack the "top 6" from the static charity stripe..

    Team Rebounding Difference, You won't want to hear this but Detroit is #20, with a -1.1 pg. #1 Jazz +4.7, #2 Knicks +4.1, #3 Mavs +4.0, #4 Bucks +4.0, #5 Cavs +3.4 and #6 Magic +3.1..

This is to worry about. Based on a number of things already noted the Pistons are showing a lack of legs. If it weren't for the 3's we'd be whining a lot more. We were #5 at +6.3 in November. This says Flip better put 'Dyess, DD, J Max and maybe (dare I say it) the DMC on the floor. We need to mitigate the minutes our starters are playing.

    Team Assists, #1 Suns 26.12 pg, #2 PISTONS 23.78, #3 Kings 23.65, #4 Nuggets 23.38, #5 Nets 22.72, #6 Bulls 22.56.

In November Detroit was #3 at 24.33. Not much slippage here. Detroit is getting their shots early in their set-ups. Thats why the 3's are open and we aren't getting as many O boards. We aren't going inside late in the clock cause we're already releasing and heading down the floor on D. This needs to stay above 23ppg or we'll start sliding..

Team Personal Fouls, This is about R-E-S-P-E-C-t, and Detroit gets it from where it matters most, the guys on the whistles. Detroit is #1 at getting the least amount of fouls called against them in the league, 20.52 pg. #2 Grizz 21.08, #3 Philly 21.19, #4 Spurs 21.35, #5 Cavs 21.50 and #6 Suns 21.71.

In November the Pistons were #2 at 21.00. This ones huge. I'll take the respect of the zebras over the repect of mass media.

Team Turnovers, Detroit is #1, stingiest in the league, hands like super glue, ball is like a silkscreened toupe on a bald man. #2 Wolves 12.17, #3 Philly 12.31, #4 Grizz 13.04, #5 Bucks 7.39, #6 Mavs 7.38.

This is what 5 guys playing together longer than any other team in the league is supposed to get you, synchronicity (it ain't a city in France folks).

Team Assist Differential, #1 Suns with an unbelievable +10.29. That's what you get with a deep dishing point playing in the paint in the west, good stuff. #2 Detroit +4.26, #3 Spurs +3.42, #4 Wolves +3.30, #5 Jazz +3.0 and #6 Kings +1.35..

The Pistons were #2 at +5.17 in November. This (4.26) is still a very solid number for us. I think the fact that we're getting so many quick good looks early in our set-ups has reduced the passing ratio, hence effects the number a little bit.

Team Swats, Detroit is #10 at 5.87 pg. #1 "Poitland" (as they say in Brooklyn) with 6.60 swats pg. #2 Heat 6.46, #3 Suns 6.46, #4 Wolves 6.22, #5 Nuggets 6.19 and #6 Grizz at 6.04.

Good news is Detroit is up 8 spots since November. They were 18th at 4.33. More helpside from Ben?...Hmmm, 5 of the 6 teams swatting away irritables are out'a the west, how friggin weird is that?!?

One thing to remember IMO about these stats is the fact that we have played so many games away from home. Also add in the fact that every game seems like a back to back or 3 in 4-5 days. IMO that has alot to do with some of the numbers that should be higher like rebounding. However, it also shows how amazing the fg% etc is.

***Thanks for all of those stats. The commentary was very nice as well. Keep up the Great Work!

Real nice work G-man... I would think the points differencial would carry more weight than the PPG given up (or rebounds)...
I will also say that it's hard to imagine our 3 pt % remaining this high ... there needs to be a greater focus on scoring in the paint (may explain lower rebounds and FT attempts).
Flip will likely set some short term goals to improve rebounding and inside scoring.
Areas that I'd like to see improve over the next 25 games:
    • Develop a consistent sub pattern
    • Improve P&R defense
    • Do a better job of containing gaurd dribble pen
    • Sheeds % of inside to outside shots change by 20% (more inside)
    • Run more plays for Tayshaun
    • Darko to earn more minutes so we can make a decision
    • Obtain more size/scoring from our backup SF
    • Better internal weakside help defense (rotate and seal)
    • Bench to improve +/- by 10%

That was absolutely fantastic. I loved every drop, can't wait until next month for the new stats.

The best news about the stats is; Miami wasn't in any of the top 6 or 7.

Hear ya Merc. I especially like the idea of running more plays for Tay. I think we are seeing a little better weakside help which is why our swats are up by +1 a game. The thing we haven't seen much of this season so far is Tay swatting shots. 1 swat a game by him would make a big difference in the numbers overall and improve (+) the team scoring differential, (maybe add 1 point)...

    nice read.

Funny how the numbers ultimately support everything we discuss in the forums. It is still awe-inspiring that we have accomplished so much given such an early difficult schedule.

Not dragging that ball and chain...

That LB made the team do. Using the shoot clock, making extra passes, constantly going inside. Now our guys are free to just beat the pants off people.
    **************************************************
What the stats show in TEAM FG % DIFF. #9 - is we are doing all the extra things to win games, like assists, steals, blocks and hustle.

With the Kings at #2 in TEAM FG % - is even if you shot the best you still must do the hustle things to win games. The Kings are below .500 in winning.

About the TEAM ASSIST #2 AND DIFF. #2 coupled with TEAM TURNOVERS #1- is our floor vision is superior...we make the right pass at the right time.

Note: I wouldn't worry about team rebounding with everything else going right. We just out rebounded the Spurs about 2 to 1.
