This always brings me back to our storied history of rewarding everyone BUT the guys who won for us. Billups nor Wallace ever made that much playing here.

Smith has a totally different game from Melo. Smith plays defense, rebounds. He's like a mini Ben Wallace who can score.

I don't know it was too much to pay considering we have to spend money to get to the minimum cap level. Look at who's out there. Were we going to land a different all-star type player for less?

Also, this is great. Apparently Joe and the Pistons basically greased everything for Calderon to sign in Dallas, so they could get rid of the cap hold to get Smith. It almost sounds like JD had a plan.

Yeah, Smith was probably the closest to stardom, speaking of availability to Dumars. Next year top FA class is out of Dumars reach anyway.

I like the deal...although, I wonder if we could have gotten him for 12...maybe, maybe not...However, I'm thrilled we didn't have to surrender anything to make it happen.

I don't know...I think you can't really say that if you don't make the effort. This is the same problem that Portland has....they're always whining that no one will ever come play there, but they NEVER make the effort and go after anyone big enough.

After D-Ho, Smith was probably the biggest FA this year. And even if we could get D-Ho, he's a poor man's Andre Drummond anyways :cheeky-smiley-012:

Good move JD. He stayed with it. Second best FA in the league and only 27. This will open things up for Mitchell and JD can sit back and see how things develop. For the short term, and if you can not get Teague from Atlanta, then go with Mo Williams.

All I have to say about the J Smooth signing is this:

    YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHH

ok, I have composed myself now. I don't think Joe is quite done yet. I think we may discover other things in the works (Rondo, Gay anyone).

I don't think Gay is going to happen. ...as far as Rondo...it's possible, but Ainge may make Joe wait until mid-season to see what he can squeeze out of him. Frankly, I think we as fans may want to sit back and wait as well. We need to know that Rondo will actually recover properly.

After D-Ho and Paul. It's really exciting that something finally happens, perfect fit or not. It was a while since I saw Breaking News and Pistons in the same sentence.

I don't really see the Melo comparison. He's much better defensively, better rebounder and a better passer. The only thing Melo got on him is shooting, and that's with a large margin.

I don't love the fit but they went out and got a legit player.

I'm surprised no one has played the 'Joe surely has something else up his sleeve' card yet.

    I am stunned.

Joe has little to offer but scrub. However, Ainge stepped out on a ledge hiring Stevens and might go for broke with a total re-build. Doubt Rondo wants to stay. Celtics fans would be drinking heavily if BoT became their leading scorer this season

Part of the reason I made the comparison is because of possible malcontent/chemistry issues (Hawks have suspended him in the past). Not sure how Mo will deal with it. Would be interesting if Sheed was brought in to help him work through that :smoke06:
