List of Lion favs over last 50 years... 1. Alex Karras 2. Lem Barney 3. Barry Sanders 4. Brett Perriman 5. Doug English 6. Billy Sims 7. Chris Spielman 8. Dick LeBeau 9. Rockne Freitas 10. Mel Gray
Great list, but my boy Landry has to be in there for me. Who is Mel Gray-do you mean Mel Farr? Charlie Sanders. Eddie Murray. My favorite coach was Monte Clark.
Mel Gray was the best kickoff returner in the NFL during his 7 odd years here in the early 90s. Our Special teams coach was the best also. I never appreciated Charlie Sanders as others did. When I watch, he dropped the easy catch a lot while making circus catches. Eddie Murray is a kicker...That's like calling a golfer an athlete IMHO... Loved Mel Farr, just always injured. I liked Monte Clark because he once cut a player after a game. When the player was interviewed after the game about a poor coverage on pass defense, player's attitude was, better luck next time. So Monte showeed him the door.
Looks like the Lions got their boy. Here we go again... Agents: Lions and Stafford agree on 6-year deal - NFL - Yahoo! Sports
FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Glazer: Lions to take Stafford with No. 1 pick Also a rookie cap is NEEDED, an unproven QB is making more then some of the best players in the NFL... HOLY MOLY, he's now the three highest paid player in the NFL PS: Good Luck Lions Fans...hopefully you guys get a O-Line so that he won't bust.
Oh come on. Seems like fair compensation considering his career will be ruined. I'm sure that factored into the negotiations. "But you are asking my client to come play for the Lions!!!"
Detroit Lions First Round Draft Picks since 2002: 2002 - Joey Harrington - QB - #3 overall 2003 - Charles Rogers - WR - #2 overall 2004 - Roy Williams - WR - #7 overall 2004 - Kevin Jones - RB - #30 overall 2005 - Mike Williams - WR - #10 overall 2006 - Ernie Sims - LB - #9 overall 2007 - Calvin Johnson - WR - #2 overall 2008 - Gosder Cherilus - RT - #17 overall (traded back from #15) 2009 - Matthew Stafford - QB - #1 overall So to recap, FOUR WRs & TWO QBs with top 10 picks in the past 7 years. Three of the 4 WRs and our #3 overall QB are no longer on the team, but have cost us TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars in cap space. The Lions have taken only ONE defensive player (Sims) and ONE non-skill position offensive player (Cherilus) in the first round the past 7 years (and counting). Of our last 8 first round picks (not including Stafford), only THREE of them are still on our roster. The Lions have had a top 15 pick 8 years in a row. A top 5 pick 4 times in the past 8 years. I just threw up in my mouth a little while typing that list. The results don't get any better in rounds 2-7 either (I'll spare you the gruesome details). Gee, I wonder why this team is still the worst franchise in the league. Maybe because they CAN'T EVALUATE TALENT!!!! You'll have to excuse me if I don't get too excited about paying $41.7 million guarenteed to a guy that has never set foot on an NFL field.
Wow. I'm disappointed. We needed to build our defense first. At least there is one positive in all of this. I like the way the Lions were absolutely going to have their pick signed before he was drafted. Now there will be no holdout for the qb, missing half of training camp and nearly all of the season. He's in the bag and will be able to immediately start on learning the offense. Maybe Bobby Layne is looking down (or up) and removing his curse, because this guy played at his high school. What are the chances of that?
What's sad Jammer, is that the SAME crew that has been in the draft room was there again...Except for the coach and Millen. We have the exact same scouts.
I was ready to build in the trenches first also. Having him sign early will be viewed by many as weakness on the part of the Lions. (we had to pay extra to salvage this prospect) This will cause fans to ride him early and often. Joey came in passing out roses to the fans and look what happened to him. This is just another poor decision by the top mgmt.
