With the Sixers deciding on Brett Brown, pretty much the teams have settled on their coaches for the next season. Here's a list of all coaches in the association:

    Celtics: Brad Stevens
    Nets: Jason Kidd
    Knicks: Mike Woodson
    Sixers: Brett Brown
    Raptors: Dwane Casey
    Bulls: Tom Thibodeau
    Cavs: Mike Brown
    Pistons: Maurice Cheeks
    Pacers: Frank Vogel
    Bucks: Larry Drew
    Hawks: Mike Budenholzer
    Bobcats: Steve Clifford
    Heat: Erik Spoelstra
    Magic: Jacque Vaughn
    Wizards: Randy Wittman
    Nuggets: Brian Shaw
    Wolves: Rick Adelman
    Thunder: Scott Brooks
    Blazers: Terry Stotts
    Jazz: Tyrone Corbin
    Warriors: Mark Jackson
    Clippers: Doc Rivers
    Lakers: Mike D'Antoni
    Suns: Jeff Hornacek
    Kings: Mike Malone
    Mavs: Rick Carlisle
    Rockets: Kevin McHale
    Grizzlies: David Joerger
    Pelicans: Monty Williams
    Spurs: Gregg Popovich

Lots of retreads and a bunch of rookies. So, where do you rank Cheeks among all these guys?

Personally, there are about 6-7 coaches who are really good (Thibs, RC, Pops etc). There are some on that list who either have a bazillion question marks (J.Kidd) or are set up to fail (Brad Stevens).

Some questions that come to mind are:
    - Where do you rank Cheeks among the active head coaches? (I think somewhere in 10-14 range)
    - Other than established coaches (Thibs, Vogel, Spoelstra, Brooks, Rivers, RC, Pops), would you trade Cheeks for any of the coaches in the league? (I say, yes. Brian Shaw or Budenholzer)
    - Which coach in that list is most likely to fail? (I say Jason Kidd)
    - Which coach in that list is most likely to succeed beyond expectations? (I say Jeff Hornacek)
    - Who is your COY candidate? (I say Brian Shaw)

Best not to win COY if you're a Denver coach anyway.

I have a hard time ranking Cheeks in the top 25 from his accomplishments as a coach so far.

Next season's COY will be either Rivers, Vogel or Thibodeau.
...unless the voters see the Pistons' 20 win improvement as a more impressive accomplishment and give it to coach MO!

I didn't know that coaches with agendas against winning would qualify.

If Joe ever hires Flip again, I will set all my Pistons gear on fire (then head over to Old Navy because I don't have much else to wear)

Cheeks is scaring me with his post game quotes re shooting (I.e. we just didn't make shots, nothing you can do about that, etc). This was after a game when we out shot k durant and the thunder. This feels like flip saunders all over again. No attempt to redistribute shot selection or limit smith from deep.

Cheeks seems to be a spectator so far.

He might be collecting ammo. So he can justify later beheadings.

    For the game:

    OKC's eFG was .488
    DET's eFG was .489

It's just scary that the take away by the coach was that our shots didn't fall. I'm not asking for Billy Beane here.

Well, the scouting report said clueless and lazy. He probably spends more time putting on lipstick than analyzing statistics.

While I'm still very skeptical about Cheeks, in his defense what he believes and what he says to the media are two different things. I've never understood why coaches and players are so open to reporters about everything; I'd lie to them all the time.
