Next season there will be lots of FAs on the market, not to mention the possibility of our own Rip possibly opting out of his own contract. We'll have Sheed as an expiring contract, should we pursue any marquee names?

Through sign and trade or other ways...

Players I would like to see the Pistons take a run at in this order

    Dwight Howard
    Elton Brand
    Luol Deng
    Timmmmy D
    The Matrix
    Kevin Martin
    Ben Gordon

If the Pistons felt like not making a strong case to keep RIP Martin and Gordon move up in priority a little.

I'd like to make a serious run at Okafor, a Pistons type Center, maybe a sign and trade with Sheed's expiring contract depending on how Amir develops this season.

According to espn.com's list, Rip is not going to be a free agent. (granted, it has not been updated to say McDyess has been issued an extension, but still it does not say Rip can opt out)

Also, according to hoopshype, he cannot opt out, either.
HoopsHype - NBA Salaries - Detroit Pistons

Only hoopsworld says he can opt out.

    What's the deal?

I think getting Okafor would be HUGE. But the Pistons rarely go after big-name guys. Davidson does not want to get into a bidding war.

I'd love to get one of these players in this order. But, I don't think the Pistons can match what there teams can offer.

    1. Emeka Okafor
    2. Andris Biedrins
    3. Nenad Krstic
    4. Desagana Diop

    Good add with Diop

As for matching other teams, if we do a sign and trade with Sheed's expiring contract most teams want something back if they're losing good players like these... (this is dependant on confidence in supplementing Sheed with Amir/Maxy/Dyess AND believing we will not try to bring Sheed back)

I think these guys are upper middle of the pack FAs. With the Lakers not trading Kobe and Agent 0 already saying he'll opt out of his contract, plus JO making some noise, in addition to Tim Duncan, i think theres a clear first tier of FAs developing for next year, and the guys that we should go after should be just below them.

    1. Emeka Okafor
    2. Andris Biedrins
    3. Nenad Krstic
    4. Desagana Diop

The only one I would do a sign and trade with Sheed is Emeka Okafor or Andris Biedrins. If we could get Nenad Krstic or Desagana Diop with A trade of Flip, Nazr and a 1st and/or 2nd round pick I'd rather do that. I'd like to see Sheed come off the bench in a couple of years if we resigned him for a good price.

    Billups/Stuckey - PG
    Rip/Afflalo - SG
    Prince/Hayes - SF
    Sheed/Max/Amir - PF
    Diop/Dice - C

If we did a sign a trade with Sheed.

    Billups/Stuckey - PG
    Rip/Afflalo - SG
    Prince/Hayes - SF
    Max/Amir - PF
    Okafor/Dice- C

How realistic would actually be getting Okafor? Also, how would he fit if Flip is still here? He's definitely a player I like, but he's more around the basket and not a jump shooter. How will Flip utilize him?

He won't, he'll just make excuses about how Okafor would need to find a way to fit within the offense and get his shots because his offense doesn't favor anyone and is designed to just get the open shots where they appear.

You could give Saunders Okafor and he would probably get about 8 ppg out of him and look at you with a straight face and tell you he's doing a good job of coaching.

Exactly my worry. I wonder how much more hands on Joe D. is going to be this season? Hopefully he'll get involved more in coaching behind the closed doors and mandate some more good mantra for Pistons.

That's not Joe's style. I think before the season he will tell Flip what he expects. He's not going to micro-manage during the season, though.

Desagana Diop??? I don't see how Diop is any kind of an up-grade over Mohammed.

Diop is some sort of defensive prescence. I will agree with you though. It is a waste of time for the Pistons to go after him because even though he is an upgrade over Nazr he is not much better at all, and some could make the argument for Nazr being better. The Pistons should go after someone who is a clear upgrade. It would be hard to get that upgrade, but very rarely you get something good without working for it.

That is what I am worried about as well - Flip reverting to his old habbits once the season gets going and Joe steps back. My hope is that Joe is going to follow through this time and get involved more as he said he would do.

If we got rid of Nazr I would want Diop. Diop makes 2 million less and would only play about 15-20 minutes anyways. If Nazr only made 3 million I'd say keep him. But he's not worth 5 million a year. We really don't need a Center who plays "starter minutes"anyways. If we did have one how would Max and Amir get the minutes they need to develop.

So you're saying that Detroit is not like Milwaukee?
