    Dan Wetzel:

    2:40 p.m. ET:
The Lions take Johnson to mixed reviews here. Not sure why the fans are bothered, unless it is general humor at anything the Lions do. The "overrated" pick even got busted out. I don't know about that. He's 6-5, 239 pounds with speed and productivity. At some point, Detroit is going to get some good luck, too. • Is there a more disappointing experience in football then being handed the Lions Honolulu blue hat and told welcome to the league? I mean, Calvin Johnson worked a long time to get to this point. There is no way he is 100 percent happy about not sliding down to Tampa.
    • If the Lions do keep Johnson then this was the influence of offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who was dreaming of designing an offense with Roy Williams on one side and Johnson on the other. And, on paper, this looks formidable. Of course, the Lions' last five top-10 picks looked formidable on paper also.

Only the Lions. This is incredibly disappointing given the trade rumours on the table from Denver and Atlanta.

We just signed Furrey to #2 WR money, are we going to play him as a #3 now?

Millen on the radio right now giving a presser. He just ran away before facing any tough questions. Here comes Sgt. Slaughter.

Good thought. But he was the best player available and they still have an excellent opportunity at trading if they desire. The guy sounds like a real stud.

on one hand you can say, 'wow a WR tandem of williams, johnson, and furrey ... how can defenses cover us? we can throw deep every down if we want and have that threat, plus furrey over the middle and short routes ... wow.'

but then again you could say that last year with williams/rogers/williams, or the year before with williams/rogers/hakim.

...so yeah. if we could trade w/TB and get both their 2nd round picks, go for it. but that's not gonna happen.

Yeah, I think under the circumstances we couldn't pass on him. He is going to be awfully good...or at least would have been destined for greatness if NOT drafted by Detroit.

I would have liked to get something done with Tampa though. Maybe they refused, or maybe once Joe Thomas was off the board we decided not to do it. It will be interesting to see what happened.

Like the CJ pick. Have seen highlight reels of him during his college days and he is a beast. He didn't even have a good QB. Yes, he is not an every down player but he will be a impact player. Admas is not a prototypical DE like Peppers. Peterson looks like a stud too, but the Lions sealed that deal with their three man running back committee.

Would trade him for Willis and two 2nd round picks if Atlanta makes the choice.

This team needs help on defense. Rod's rationale was that because they have 2 very good WRs, CJ instantly makes them better.

The issue I have is that a lot of our woes rested on our O-Line last year and that we couldn't effectively play the Tampa 2 defense because our pass rush was very inconsistent.

I do not understand why drafting an Adams would not make Redding and Rogers better. Or why a legit MLB would not make Boss Bailey and Ernie Sims better.

Don't even get me started on our secondary...

I hear you Roscoe. I think we are just so screwed up that without a GM with a brain to really set a new plan in action, nothing we do will be enough.

One player won't change anything and Millen was too much of a *&^$#$#*^%$ to make a smart deal on draft day.

Martz just spoke about CJ. The impression I got is that it was his pick all of the way.

He said that the 3 Wide will be Roy and CJ on the outside with Furrey at the slot, and the 4 wide would be Roy and CJ on the outside with Shaun MacDonald and Furrey as the inside WRs.

I would have to assume that trips 4-wide sets would see CJ running with the slot receivers and Roy isolated (to draw coverages) on the outside.

Ok, next pick get somebody on offense who can give the receivers time to run their pattern. Take Drew Stanton with the third pick if he is still there. Then get two more OL's.

Screw defense. We can fix that next year. :pound:

    Lousy reverse runner.
    -
good toughness battling for the ball, but he has also left quite a few passes on the field, perhaps due to poor passing precision from the quarterback position, but he has caught only 127 of 271 passes thrown to him … For a player over 6-foot-4 and with his jumping skills (45 inches) along with his long reach, it is hard to imagine the smaller cornerbacks having success in batting away 21 of those passes thrown to him the last two-plus years … Better down field than on deep routes, as he tends to lose sight of the ball over his head … Has some hip stiffness when trying to change direction and this will sometimes prevent him from
What? -"better down field than on deep routes? They're not the same?

Well, if Mooch was still here, we would be worrying about his ability to run the 3 yard crossing pattern. lol

We got him, and they ain't trading him. I don't think Millen is capable of making a smart trade and shys away from them.

Got to make the best of it all and hope they address some needs with later picks. We know there are a lot of needs.
