As long as there is ownership uncertainty, Joe is not going to be aggressive IMO. He's playing a run out the clock game until he can figure out what his new boss will want.

Reminds me of when McCloskey offered the Lakers the entire Pistons roster for Magic Johnson.

The way that the Cavs are set up right now, do they have the cap space next year to try and re-sign LeBum and STAT? And at what expense to the surrounding cast?

They will have bird rights to both, right? If so, then they can sign them and go into tax territory. It all comes down to whether that is financially viable for them.

It might be an interesting gamble if they are sure the league will come out with a hard cap, because they would probably be able to get some grandfathering in for already signed contracts...

They're already paying the lux tax.

According to ESPN's trade machine, Charlie V earns more per year than Varejao also.

The trade deadline is quickly gaining on the draft as my least favorite thing.

WRT grandfathering, I realize I didn't finish my thought.

If the tax is eliminated with a hard cap, then grandfathering in would favour whoever ran up massive salaries prior to the new CBA.

This is just conjecture on my part, but since the owners are all in a cartel together, I can't see why they would punish anyone when they no longer have tax redistribution, and so, nothing to gain by enforcing penalties.

Also, if there is likely to be a work stoppage, then that really changes the dynamic of racking up a big payroll (knowing you will get a one year reprieve).

What could it do to the owners bargaining power if LeBron started to openly negotiate with Euro teams?

It appears that Ernie is correct, but only for this season. Looks like Sideshow Bob has a rear loaded contract, and will be making 9.5 mil in his final year of contract, where Charlie V will max at 8 in his final year.

This season Charlie is making 6.5 and Andy is at 6.3.

    Devastating.

But LBJ is no Cassius Clay. While his steak is triple A, his earnings are based on sizzle.

He was at the most recent meeting in Dallas. Think if he, Kobe, Wade and Bosh all threaten to go? Oohhh boy.......

The players should also start talking up ticket and concession prices for the fans if the owners keep looking to cut money.

Personally, I don't see how partially guaranteeing contracts is going to help the owners. If anything I think it will make them more reckless.

Hamilton to Dallas? - Detroit Bad Boys

Interesting proposal from the guys at DBB. I'd be tempted by this. Dampier has one year left on his contract after this @ $13m. If Dampier turns out to be serviceable we can re-sign him at a much reduced price. If not, it's a very nice expiring and we free up the logjam at the 2 and ditch Rip's long-term deal.

Dampier is a horrible player. He makes NazMo look like Kareem.

Damps deal is done next year… but it gets better... his deal after this year is not guaranteed
    From ESPN:
"Dampier's value to the Mavericks beyond this season is probably as trade bait. A team can deal for Dampier next summer and cut him without paying a penny because of the creative wording of his contract, making him a valuable commodity in the NBA economy."

I can see a trade & buyout (or release)…. He’s essentially an expiring.
Here's what I'm hoping pans out.... we pick up an extra pick (Kwame /Wilcox)... we deal Rip for ANY contract expiring in 10/11... then the new CBA kicks in while most teams are capped out going into 11/12 due to the feeding frenzy this summer... then it's our year to make hay.
Keeping an eye on the prize.

Yeah, my point is, Naz could probably play the game 3 inches shorter. He wouldn't be great, but he could be a bench player.

Dampier couldn't play the game 3 inches shorter. He's in the encyclopedia under the word STIFF.
You know how we do. :D

    Nuggets pursuing Ben Wallace?

I wonder what they were offering. Probably not much given the tiny contract Big Ben has.

Joe would have to be smoking crack to trade Ben Wallace. There is no level at which that trade makes sense.

It would make sense to trade Ben to a contender if we were able to package him with a bigger contract as sweetener. We'd have to get back an expiring. Rip or Tay + Ben would be a fair package.

Ben would be happy because he'd be sent somewhere with another chance to get a title. Also, he's proven that he's better than everyone assumed and that injuries were the primary reason for his play over the past couple years.
