Riley mum on status: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

While Pat Riley declined Friday to commit to coaching the Heat next season, he said he expects Alonzo Mourning to return, anticipates losing either Jason Kapono or James Posey or both in free agency, and will wait until later in the offseason to decide about bringing back veteran guard Eddie Jones.

Speaking at length for the first time since his team was swept out of the first round of the playoffs by the Bulls in April, Riley touched on several unresolved issues as his team approaches Sunday's start of free agency.

What a gigantic a-hole. The guy hasn't even played an NBA game and he's already trying to pick and choose.

Suns may have to battle for Hill

The Suns were expected to reach out to forward Grant Hill late Saturday when the NBA free-agency contact period opened.

Phoenix planned to contact Hill and his agent, Lon Babby, to set up a meeting with the 34-year-old veteran, who is the Suns' free-agency priority.

League sources said the belief is that Hill favors Phoenix, but ESPN reported that the Detroit Pistons are the favorite.

Others wonder if he would leave Orlando. Hill could feel he owes the Magic after making $92 million over seven injury-riddled years.

With the Suns facing the NBA's second-highest 2008 luxury tax (about $7 million), they will offer a veteran's minimum salary of $1.2 million but can offer a shot at a title, a system that fits his versatility and non-taxing practices for his ankle issues.

The Newark Star Ledger is reporting that Carter, who opted out of the final year of his contract which called for a $16.3 million salary next season, has agreed to a four-year, $61.8 million contract with the Nets. The contract with the team holds an option for a fifth year.

I am not a "capolgist" as some on the forum are, however, I bet Riley has his eye on one Rashard Lewis to add to his frontcourt, if at all possible.

The Mavericks were among the first half-dozen teams to inquire about free-agent swingman Gerald Wallace, but it will be a long, difficult journey to acquire him.
It's also possible that other free-agent targets will be more obtainable.
Still, Wallace is near or at the top of the Mavs' wish list, even though acquiring him will take much more than the mid-level exception, expected to be between $5.8 million and $6 million.
Wallace, who averaged 18.1 points and 7.2 rebounds for Charlotte last season, is considered one of the top three free agents left on the board, along with Seattle's Rashard Lewis and Detroit's Chauncey Billups. He will command as much as $10 million annually, which means the Mavericks would have to work a sign-and-trade deal with the Bobcats.

I didn't really think Walton would be going anywhere. That is an extremely affordable offer in today's marketplace, IMO. Only $5 million a season on average for a guy that brings a lot of different things to the table.

Salt Lake Tribune - NBA: Jazz target Toronto's Morris Peterson

The Jazz reached out to Toronto's Morris Peterson in the opening minutes of the free-agent negotiating period Saturday night, and Peterson is said to have Utah first on his list of preferred destinations, a source said Sunday.
Peterson would fill the Jazz's needs for a three-point shooter and perimeter defender, though he also would add to the team's congestion of players at the shooting guard and small forward positions.
Peterson, who turns 30 on Aug. 26, played seven seasons with the Raptors and was a full-time starter until this season. He would come to the Jazz with the intention of starting at shooting guard, a job held by four different players this season.

Looks like Lewis and Orlando have agreed to a deal while they let Darko become an unrestricted free agent

Orlando television station WKMG Local 6 is reporting that Rashard Lewis has agreed to sign with the Orlando Magic on July 11.

The deal is reported for 5 years and $75 million.

Sports anchor David Pingalore also reported the Magic will allow restricted free agent forward Darko Milicic to become an unrestricted free agent.
