I have updated per request. Please let me know which hypothesis you'd like to test in this case.

Pistons starting the season at #18: NBA Basketball Power Rankings - National Basketball Association - ESPN
Way too low. 10. OKC 11. Nawlens 12. Detroit 13. Denver 14. New York 15. Minnesota 16. Dallas 17. Portland 18. Washington
I think this season will be a lot more fun to watch as a Pistons fan, but I think there may be more growing pains than one might think.
IMVMHO, we don't know really if this coach can coach, or will be allowed to coach by Dumars. Just don't know. I am hopeful, I really think we can win a ton of games this year - but not if our coach (forced by Dumars or not): Plays CV alot. Overplays Bynum. Plays JJ a lot at power forward. Plays Singler over Pope just because of a bias against rookies or whatever else excuse. Plays Stuckey at shooting guard a lot. Decides not to play Mitchell much. Overplays Harrellson. Lets Smith shoot way too much from the outside, ditto for Jennings. Decides to break up Monroe and Drummond after us fans waited patiently all last season for this to happen. Again, hey, maybe none of this happens. Maybe the owner has told Cheeks to go out and win games, and ignore any agenda put forth by Dumars that does not equate to games being won. And maybe Cheeks is a truly good coach, who will play the guys who can win games for us. Lets see.
The only "agenda" that Joe has is to keep his job. If Mo loses, Joe will be spending his time coordinating children's birthday parties at the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse in Shelby Township.
This team should make the playoffs. I'm not as high as Jalen/Simmons, I don't think we will sneak a 5th seed. But we will provide a nightmare first round match up.
Lee, about half the things on your list will definitely happen.
You want Jennings to shoot from the outside, that's where he's most comfortable. Let's try to get this thread back to power rankings pls.
I read where S. I. has us ranked 9th in our own conference. They seem to think the weak link is our coaching staff.
No love for Sheed.

Too bad I can't contribute cause Scoe wants this back on topic.
The Pistons had the 23 best record last season. Obviously, the roster has improved. The question is "Are they a playoff team?"
