I haven't seen a second of Datome, yet I am ready to gift him 12-18 minutes per game until he shows that he can't handle it. He was the MVP of his league last year- so we know he is a gamer at least (even if it turns out that he has NBA deficiencies). I'm imagining him to be a more athletic version of Fabio.

I think what I have seen of Datome, he is a much better version of Fabio. Fabio was a pretty decent defender and rebounder, but Gigi plays all over the court, hitting jays, dunking, swatting shots.

I've got no beef with Datome, but I've got to see him play before I can put him in the mix. I hope he can unseat Jerebko and move himself into the permanent category.

A rotation, assuming we sign Rip. Which I am all for by the way - if he will accept a role off the bench. We could really use him to shore up our bench.

Start: Jennings, Pope, Smith, Monroe, Drummond.

2nd unit: Siva, Rip, Datome, Mitchell (either Drummond or Monroe playing with the 2nd unit, and a bit of Harrelson playing at center just to get a bit more time with our starting front line playing together.)

And throw in JJ there at small forward for the 2nd unit if Datome can't beat him out for minutes there. In addition, we could use Rip as a small forward some. Or Pope, or both Pope and Hamilton in together, with their roles possibly changing depending on the end of the floor and depending on who the opposing wing players are at the moment.

PS, I think we should trade a bunch of our guys away, whatever, to get a better backup small forward. But Rip would sure square up our backup shooting guard spot.

Some units we could see after adding Hamilton. This is assuming Billups does play, with a role not really defined further than being a guard in the rotation.

Jennings, Billups, Hamilton, Mitchell, Smith, Drummond

Siva, Pope, Hamilton, Mitchell, Monroe, Harrellson.

    Billups, Hamilton, Datome, Mitchell, Drummond.

Rip and Chauncey are old men now, just like me.

Which is why I see them as coming off the bench, and not even playing on an every game basis for us. There are those, in contrast, who think Billups should play every game - and some of those who think he should start at shooting guard. I think that is a bit much.

I think it would be hard on a coach and a team to settle into rotations and roles if a couple players only played once in a while, depending on how much their aging body was aching each day.

If he is on the roster, Billups needs to play every day. Perhaps it is only 15 minutes per game.

Rip Hamilton? Guy's whole role is running through screens and hitting mid range jumper (+free throws). But he can't run anymore, and neither can he shoot. And this is assuming we get more than 400 minutes from the guy through a whole season. We will get better play sticking Jorts at the 2.

Secondly, you can't just slot Hamilton at the 3. He would get demolished by 3's in this NBA, with the exception of maybe Mbah a Moute, and even then I wouldn't be surprised if he gets torched on defense.

Hire Rip to be a color commentator for the Pistons so we can all play the "Like I Always Said" drinking game in the chat room during each broadcast.

Rip had a strong showing in his last playoff run with the Bulls earning praise. I'm not saying they should sign him, but to act like he's Bad Grandpa ain't right.

I'm not sure strong showing is a good description. The Bulls played 12 playoff games. Of which, Rip played in 4 games. In 2 of the games, he didn't score. One game, he had 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting (36%). In the other game, he had 15 points (6-of-12), 4 fouls, and 3 turnovers.

Was that last year? Maybe I'm thinking of the year Rose got hurt.

Yes sir. That was last year.

Two years ago, Rip averaged 13 ppg in a 6-game first-round loss to the Sixers.

Rotations change all year long due to injuries. No reason you can't plan days off for older players. To avoid injuries to them. And to keep them fresh for the playoffs. Remember, things can change as we get around playoff time. If they are still that good, of course they can start playing more regularly in March / April.
