If you need to watch a lot of games before you can say what a player is, isn't, could or could not be, then how can you say that Jennings is superior to Knight talent wise when you'd only seen him play 6 times?

For sure. But stats paint a really good picture most of the time, and they are a great starting point for comparison, especially when you can't watch every single player, every single game. Simply saying, 'Bro Rudy Gay is the sickest baller check out his dunkz on youtube, he will take us to the CF' or isolating proficiencies for a players, whilst not innacurate, is arguing to false ends. For Jennings vs Knight, in reality, the advanced stats are telling us exactly what we already know - Jennings is a better PnR guard, who has far better range, but is slightly to incredibly less effective on defense.

To be honest, I think Rudy Gay is a good player. He is certainly talented, athletic and puts in the work. So it just becomes a question of fit. Where does Gay fit in Detroit, bearing in mind that he is another high usage rate iso-lover who is completely inneffective outside of 15ft. The answer is, he doesn't fit. Surround him with 3 point bombers and he will give you 30 a night at the rim. If Toronto will accept Stuckey + Villenueva for him, sure I would take it. But I'm not goign to actively pursue that trade.

Eric Gordon has played 247 games in the last 5 seasons. 42 last season. He shot 40/32/84. He is injury plagued, not particularly efficient and getting paid max money. There is no argument. Unless he can show pre glass legs numbers for a solid year, there isn't much point talking about him.

When the rest of the league have started to embrace efficiency, Detroit bring in Smith, Jennings and Gay. For me the offseason was at A+ after the Smith, Sheed and Datome signings, it's at B- now and will be a D- if we trade Stuckey and Chaz for Gay.

It is kind of suspicious that all these low efficiency guys are available...

When you look back and analyze the posts in this forum, your question is going to generate the following 5 reactions, (adjusted for average poster presence over 30 day basis):

    - TaS's response proving the validity of stats will be between 20-32 lines long and will contain approximately 68 numbers (rounded up).
    - 3 posters (would've been 2 if your post had appeared Mon-Thu) will suggest that someone should start a poll about the effectiveness of stats
    - pass99 will support (or debunk) the effectiveness of stats with references to Reveries of a Solitary Walker and Gödel's Proof which will baffle 8,281 readers and delight 8,285 readers.
    - blueadams will start a thread
    - it will inspire Lee to cook up a new rotation which will leave out at least one of the top 5 salaries on the team.
