Only 31 points for ALL Charlotte's big men though compared with 52 points from LA's big men. Okafor with only 9 points.

Also, Gasol did have 2 blocks and was +14 for the game.

His defensive on court stats are the best on the Lakers team.

Charlotte: No Wallace and J.R. was injured early in the game though he did later return.

    Okafer was guarded by Odom.

I hear ya on the numbers and what I am going by is what I have seen in the five games that Pau has played in for the Lakers, all of which except for the Orlando game where against teams without a decent center.

I am not saying that Pau can't rebound, which clearly he does and he does get blocks, but what I have seen, he gets beat way too much.

I think that what makes his production numbers from 82games.com look so good are Pau's offensive numbers and his rebounding along with an occasional block and steal.

Bottom line is that I just don't see him stopping someone like Shaq or Amare.

Also, keep in mind regarding the Lakers that Kobe has been playing defense at about the same level as Michael did in his prime. Kobe's defense has been in my opinion good enough to get him on the first team all defense team this year. When you add that to his offense I would vote for him for MVP over Lebron and KG. Chris Paul would be up there too but not as a first choice for me.

    :hoops:

If we played by stats Bowen is an average defender at best. He averages less than 3 boards, less than 1 steal, and less than 1 block per game, not only for this season, but for his career.

Yeah, Kobe can play D when he wants to. His performance in this last go around with team USA was impressive.

I'm glad the Lakers didn't get Artest.

Gasol does have some weak sauce in him. But I think it is more physical than attitude. I can't really do the mental simulation of him vs. Shaq in the WCF though. Shaq has been so bad that it just seems like they need to go up tempo and he'll be toast (Phoenix can't go their normal speed with the big speed bump in there).

Defense is 99% effort. If you pour your heart out you can be effective defensively. Physical ability can make you a great defender like Ben Wallace. Intangibles can make you a great defender like TD and Sheed too, but effort is the key to defense.

    It is.

If it weren't for Sheed going to the All-star game we wouldn't even have this thread and be discussing this. LOL

You know what would be a great protest by Sheed?

Playing championship defense at the all-star game. Take a charge, block some shots, yell ball don't lie a few times

He does have the game and personality to pull off stealing the spotlight from the leagues more cherished darlings.

Stealing the spotlight is what the all-star game is all about. Since Sheed won't be able to do it with offense, he needs to do something different. KG and Sheed need to create the steel curtain in the lane.

Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman played some defense in a couple of All-Star games.

Some great video highlights of previous All-Star games on the NBA.com web site:

I'm kinda hoping that Sheed NEVER breaches the 3-point line in this one

I'd like to see Roscoe jack-up at least 15 threes while he, Chauncey and Rip TOTALLY FREEZE-OUT Lebron.

You have to be careful freezing out a mega-star. When Zeke froze out MJ at an All-Star game, MJ made sure Isiah didn't get to join the Dream Team.

I'd like to see Sheed just pull up at half-court at launch one.

What about just punting the ball into the stands as soon as they pass it to him? Has anyone ever been ejected from the all-star game?

It would be AWESOME if he at least got a tech. I wonder if it would count toward his total for the year?
