I don't know if you can trade Smith but at least its sort of viable.

Jeremy Lin would cut into Siva's minutes.

The true winners in that trade would be the Mavs. They have a hole in the C position and Asik & Dirk would complement each other well. JJ is a good hustle guy for them as well.

I believe we can trade Smith now, but if we trade away Smith and get Lin back, wouldn't that be Dumars kinda admitting that both of his marquee FA signings were busts?

Sheed was a trade. Since the Sheed signing, Dumars' notable FA acquisitions have been (not counting Pistons that became FAs and we resigned):

    2/26/2004: Lindsey Hunter
    7/14/2004: Antonio McDyess
    3/4/2005: Elden Campbell
    9/2/2005: Mo Evans
    7/18/2006: Nazr Mohammad
    7/18/2006: Flip Murray
    1/16/2007: Chris Webber
    8/16/2007: Jarvis Hayes
    8/1/2008: Kwame Brown
    8/6/2008: Herrrrrrman
    8/8/2009: Ben Gordon
    8/8/2009: CV
    8/22/2009: Chris Wilcox
    8/12/2009: Ben Wallace
    8/28/2009: Chucky Atkins
    8/16/2010: T-Mac
    8/10/2013: Josh Smith
    8/15/2013: Gigi
    8/16/2013: Chauncey Billups
    8/21/2013: Jorts

So, I'd say his best FA signing was McDyess in 2004. Probably the Josh Smith signing is his second best.

That list was as depressing to put together as it is to look at afterwards. Judging by this, we should trade away CV/Stuckey expiring contracts for quality players ASAP, because there are few things more dangerous than Joe Dumars with capp spayce.

The Josh Smith signing is "Incomplete" at best right now.

Those 06-08 signings are ridiculous. Guys would have walked here to play if you paid them modestly.

Counting a buyout guy like Webber as a FA signing is wrong.

    Here's how I'd rank them:
    1) Dyess (by a mile)
    2) Lindsey Hunter (key part of championship team... Joe bent the rules to get him back)
    3) Josh Smith (fine if we play him correctly)
    4) Mo Evans (solid contributor and floor spreader)
    5) Jarvis Hayes (same)
    6) Jorts (seems to be a great cheap pick-up)
    7) Elden Campbell (Shaq fouler)
    8) Ben Wallace (avoided paying him the big bucks and got him back cheap. Feel good signing and he produced OK)
    9) Hermann (boosted attendance of middle aged women)
    10) Flip Murray (he's not as bad as the guys behind him)
    11) Chris Wilcox (had long arms)
    12) Chris Webber (fat, but could pass the ball and was at least fun to watch)
    13) Chucky Atkins (whatever)
    14) Gigi (for an MVP, he sure sucks at propelling the ball toward the basket on an arc).
    15) T-Mac (still had some skills, but what was the point?)
    16) Billups (just give him a clipboard already)
    17) Kwame Brown (greater fool theory works again)
    18) Nazr Mohammed (Hated watching this dude)
    19) Ben Gordon (Joe's foray into offensive > defense)
    20) Charlie Villenueva (when bucket of turd sticks as a nickname, you probably shouldn't be tweeting yourself planking on the Bentley that the fans bought for you)

So, what is the final score?

    Good: 3
    Bad: 17

Yes we can trade Smith as mentioned earlier and does it really matter if he is admitting failure. He either admits failure and does something to try and rectify it or he loses his job in the off-season.

Doesn't seem like a difficult choice if you look at it like that.

The only thing that should cause everyone to shudder if a deal like this went through would be the addition of Marion's expiring contract. That would mean 3 massive expiring deals for Detroit in Stuckey, Villanueva and Marion.

And we all know about Joe's free agent signings lately.

But if he got it right my oh my could things turn around in a hurry.

It's tough to say since the price tag is different on each. I'd say that 2 were good, the next 7 were about as expected, the 8 after that were pointless and or disappointing, and the last 3 were just not smart to begin with and didn't work out well at all.

Smith has a long history of being a nice versatile player. I'm not putting this disaster on him so far since he seems to be trying really hard to play SF. It's just not a good fit for him.

Based on his game, I think that we paid the market rate. We're just not getting market production out of him the way that we're playing him.

But even last night, I was impressed with his fight. He was playing hard, but maybe not very smart.

Ok we are not trading Josh Smith for Jeremy Lin. Nobody is making that trade.

There's no point in even assessing this for the Pistons; there's no way the Rockets go for Smith. The Rockets are the poster organization for advanced metrics and there are few players out there that advanced metrics hate more than Josh Smith. I doubt they'd look at Siva with anything other than an upturned nose, either.

I will say that if Joe is going to lose his job, clearing cap space this way is a nice way to entice a new GM into accepting the position.

There should really be a separate thread for fantasy Josh Smith trades.

The deal would essentially be more about the cap room than Lin.

But also consider if Gores is all about the $$ the marketing that Lin could bring may be worth while.

I said NO to that trade.

Jeremy Lin? Seriously? I hate that guy. Besides, Jennings can do this.

The problem is Mo Cheeks. I'll keep saying that.
