I don't know. You get to within 2 wins of the finals. Seems like they should have been able to close it out even with a 12yr old at the helm. I mean you got that far. I know its cool to hate Flip and immortalize LB and that Sheed is the greatest thing. Just call me a nerd.
You may be right, I don't know. But if your recollection is correct, it seems odd to me. Flip may not have been my first pick, but there were many worse choices, and I see no really compelling reasons for being annoyed with the hire at the time. And after they'd won 64 games, you'd have to be a real cynic not to have been hopeful for the playoffs.
Well considering the number of GMs that botch top 10 picks (Sam Bowie anyone?) I'd say it takes a rather competent GM not to screw up a top 10 pick rather than finding a gem in the top 25.
I think the general sentiment was what basketbills stated below; he wasn't a playoff guy, soft and he wasn't a "defensive" coach. But i probably remember more of those opinions b/c i agreed with him. I'm not sure what the level of support/dislike was, but it was definitely mixed reviews.

A living of experience (up or down) can give one a unique perspective. The man has an eye for talent.
Wow, I'd like to see the Pistons hold off on making him an offer so he won't play all summer then give him the money so they can run him 44 minutes a night in November.
Time to retire then. I guess Sheed's "Goin Fishin" Sheed as a baby. He learned the "evil eye" very early. YouTube - Kid Gives The Evil Eye
