I like it a lot. If you asked me 2 weeks ago whom I thought was the best coach I realistically thought we could get, my answer would be maybe that Italian computer coach Messina (sp?). This is a shocker -a good one.

I had a premonition the other day that we'd end up with a van Gundy. My thought process was, who is the most predictable/ typical hire (ie retread)?

His record is actually better than I thought it was.

Anybody have any insights about his technical ability, philosophies, pros and cons?

I'm trying to find reasons to get on board.

If he can get our 'not good' team to the finals also, I'll be a happy fan.

I only like this hire if his brother is also hired for comic relief at halftime and during timeouts. Skits, cheerleading, jokes, bad tap-dancing, throwing T-shirts into the stands. Stuff like that.

He has a top 5 winning % of like 68% or something. He is one of the best coaches ever. Period.

Larry Brown is probably the only guy in contention with him.

We can do (and certainly have done) much worse than SVG. He knows how to build & coach a team around a defensive beast in the middle, which is what we need right now. I'd rather see him at the helm than a Mark Jackson, or Mike Brown or Steve Kerr etc.

The only problem I have with him is that his teams tend to not do well in tight playoff games.

He got as much out of those teams as any other coach would have. He's 48-39 in the playoffs. He won it built around distinctly different builds in Orlando (inside\out) and Miami (Wade/Shaq). His teams typically play solid defense and above their heads and as long as he doesn't have a prima Donna center, he should be fine.

That's what I meant too. Those teams were not super talented yet he brought them very far. I agree.

I'm glad with this move. Thank you Gores! Nice move.

This afternoon I thought it was a rumor... then it got bigger and bigger. It seems that the Pistons and SVG have had talks this past few days.

I can easily see us now in the 4th-6th seed in the east next year.

Just wonder who Gores and Platinum Equity consulted with to put an offer out to SVG for so much control. We were all thinking that the Pistons were looking to make to big hires for each position. I mean there will be a GM,, but SVG will have control over him too.

His first order of duty should be to bench yank Singler from attending the draft lottery and he himself should represent the Pistons as their new face

Pistons fans. We know this guy. Think back to the Piston-Miami series. Shaq moves to Miami with a lot of game still left and Wade is emerging as a young superstar. Larry saved the series. Shaq became disenchanted with Stan and Riley took over the helm the next year (knowing he had makings of a title contender and knowing he had to act quick because of Shaq's age) and Miami got past that final's level that so many teams get to but can't seem to cross.

Then, remember, the Pistons, now aging, still beat a young Stan team with Tay blocking Turgolu to save the game. Sanders outcoached Stan.

Stan is yet another coach who is mid-level. He has some success in good situations but has not shown the ability to get the team beyond into the elite level. There are many other such coaches out there. Now we see that Gores has little basketball knowlege.

The Piston goal should be to get back to the elite level and that is where the coaching really matters.

I would put Stan at about the level of a Flip Sanders. What do you think of Sanders in retrospect?

This is a disappointing hire for me as a fan who wants the team to reach the elite level again. As I said, Lee where are you?

Think back again to Pistons/Miami and Pistons/Orlando. Stan did not show the ability to make adjustments. Think about Orlando versus other teams. When things went well, they looked like a million dollars. But when the game tightened up, Stan would be yelling at the bench but those Orlando teams would rarely turn things around.

As I said, he is about at the level of a Flip Sanders, another guy who won a lot of games but we Piston fans know, Sanders was never the one to put the team over the top. Stan's a nice guy but so was Flip. But that is not the criterion to hire a coach who will take you to the elite level.
