All of our calculations to date were to see what Det would need to do to win the division. A tie is a different story though. If we end up tying Minnesota, then they will host the tiebreaker game since they have now won the head to head series this year. They are up 10-5 with only 3 to play now. But here is the complication... NFL won't budge should Tigers, Twins need Metrodome | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The two trades by Dumbroski were busts.(Huff and Washburn..).a loss tonight means the the twins probably win this division as I see the Tigers falling apart after tonight. Leaving 14 runners on base is not what a championship team does. GO TIGERS!!!!
Now just chill!!! We will win this division thing by 2 games and Verlander wins 18 games this season. Really, there are no worries...
Tigers got runners on in innings 2 thru 8 and still had to hold on with six runs they managed to scratch out. Verlander was doing his best Cy Young impersonation thru 5 innings, but after watching the Tigers take a half hour to score 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th, he went into hurry-up fastball mode and gave up three hits and 2 runs in the top of the sixth as the Twins continued to chip away. Granderson assured that his name would be mentioned in the post game comments by hitting an insurance home run in the bottom of the 8th and then in the top of the ninth letting the ball get over his head for the Twins 5th run and allowing the tying run to reach second base. A 6-5 win reduces the Tigers magic # down to 4, but these pesky Twins will not go away and I would be surprised if we take the next two..AND VERY HAPPY
Well.....Leyland escapes with a split. We are now 71-0 in games where we lead after 8 innings.... We are 48-13 when scoring 5 or more runs..... Verlander toughed up a great game BUT has to learn to pitch when a long inning has proceeded him.... We should have had 2 today...Big ups to Porcello -the next Greg Maddox. I am so excited about our big three for the next 5 years at least: VERLANDER - PORCELLO - JACKSON thats 50 wins a year right there! Magga had his first game changing hit all year. And JL pulls him for Clete Thomas in the 6th inning?? We need one of these two..and I think if we beat Pavano, we can get the next two... Verlander saves the season. The Sox series is bigger than this one to me.
Maggs has the highest Tiger batting average in September and JL plays him in only 6 innings of a day/night double header??? mean while Gerald laird who is batting less than Grandy's weight plays all 19 innings?? Ordonez has already exceeded the # if bats to keep him under $18 mill....play the dude JL into the 8th as no lead is safe with the Twins penchant for winning and Ozzie's and his Sox trying their best to play spoiler...
Twins are toast. Always a good sign when the lead in games is larger than the magic number. Time for the fat lady to sing.
Tiger OUTS: pop up pop up K pop up pop up fly out pop out HARD GD OUT TO 3RD bloop out K K K Fly out pop up fly out SAC BUNT K fly out(because stupid A Leyland left 2 lefty hitters in) LONG FLY OUT K K double play ONLY 2 PRODUCTIVE OUTS...this has to get better in playoffs NEVERTHELESS....Great game by Bonine and THATS WHY U PLAY THE GAME..ON THE FIELD!!
Seems like most of the pop ups were on first pitch swings too. Thankfully the nine hits they got today were productive enough to score 7 runs and they didn't leave as many men on base that they are use to. Let's hope this is a momentum changer for the Tigers that gets them going with a win tonight and possible sweep of the Sox and then a great series vs the Yankees. The bats bailed out the opening performance by Bonine...as how many of us thought this may have been 2-0 Twins victory after the first inning? Lets clinch this one tomorrow so Ozzie has no say in the division winner...
The local fans still are not convinced this teams shakey performance the past month or the $10 tickets are to high? The fans will be at Comerica if they win games one or two in NY
I guess I can't critique how a person spends his or her money. It's a very sobering stat, but hey, this is Michigan we're talking about. The fans that did show up have been awesome the last few days.
i DO, BEER HEAD! The more u post, the more u should stick to playing with bigger balls!! LOL I was doing a count AS the game was going on. I wanted to see how many times an out was used PRODUCTIVELY as in :moving the runner over, a sacrifice fly or hitting the ball HARD. ONLY TWICE during the game did we do that. SO you see, BS..I mean, BL...some of us actually WATCH baseball instead of using it a s a 3 hr excuse to drink beer and eat nachos and Cracker Jack. I love how people say NOTHING matters when u win and criticize ONLY when we lose. Thats like saying it doesnt matter if your child graduated from high school with a D average, as long as they graduate. You are the Los Angeles Clippers of Tiger Chat...But I still love u!
Plus the Tigers do have 73 losses and just have not put a LIKABLE product on the field. You have to be from Detroit to undersatnd that WE KNOW Sports. U cant fool anyone to thinking that JUST because The Tigers are in first place in the Worst Division 'collectively' that Ive ever seen with a team that if it wasnt for Verlander, Jackson and Porcello would be where Chicago is. The fans have had to suffer through a season of Ordonez, Willis, Zumaya, Bonderman, Robertson, Rodney, Anderson, Larish, Guillen, Inge(No show in HR derby), Gallaraga, and a subpar year from Polanco, Grandy, Thames, Thomas, Miner, Perry, Everett and Laird. How are we about to win the division? 1. Best Starting 3 in AL. With better Offense, Verlander, Jackson and Porcello would have 60 wins not 45. 2. Solid , steady defense. Laird takes away more outs than any catcher in the game as he singlehandidly shuts down the oppositions running game. 3. Timely hitting. Like the 1987 team, One great year (Trammell = Cabrera) surrounded by late hitting heroics. 4. 72-0 when leading after 8 innings. Say what u will but at least we havent blown a lead when its time to go home. So, I'll light afatty when it's over. And remember The PLAYOFFS are a WHOLE BRAND NEW SEASON altogether. This team CAN beat the Yankees......again!
I was curious and looked it up, so I figured I'd lay it down here. Formula to calculate the magic number: number of games left for the Tigers to play plus 1 minus the difference in the loss column between the Tigs and Twins. So, just to demonstrate, # of games left = 4 plus 1 minus the difference, which is now 3 So, 4 + 1 - 3 = 2
