Yeah Leyland was in the locker room, which means why didn't the assistant coach go against the norm and leave Papa on the bench?? Coke looked to be in a groove so he could have trotted him back out there or even Albuquerque....

With Porcello now slipping to the 5th man (no playoff starts) in the rotation, you need 6-7 runs and great relief pitching to win the games he starts...:cheeky-smiley-012:

Two games back of the Sox and a possibility of falling three back with A's coming to town on Wednesday.. Come on Doug make us proud and stop the Sox..

It's easy to argue both sides of this one. Yea, Valverde has been pitching a lot, but he has been successful. I thought maybe Dotel would have been a good choice.

The first thing the Cleveland Indian announcer said was if they send Valverde out there for a third time in three nights, "we" might have his number if he is not as sharp and sure enough they did. :gaah: Let's hope he is not needed tomorrow or the next two nights...

He had 15 consecutive successful saves. I believe that makes you wrong, not me.

Tigers led 3-0 going into the bottom of the 4th....Fister struggling the last two innings and the score is now tied.

Brennan Boesh is killing us today already leaving 5 men on base with a two strikeouts and a ground out....Peralta no better as he grounds into a DP

Tigers lead 4-3 on key RBI by Delmon Young...

Both starting pitchers could only get through 4.0 innings. It's a battle here.

Still got two more innings of at bats here, but the Tigers look defeated here, even though they are only down 5-4.. You only wish now that last Thursdays game was not rained out and JV could have gotten that win vs the Sox ...

Come on Tigers....show some life in the 8th and 9th innings

    Situation Serious, but not Hopeless....
The Tigers drop their second straight one run game, and now find themselves 3 games back of the ChiSux with only 16 games left.

The good....10 straight games at home...
The bad, we got Boesch and Peralta stinking it up as out 6 and 7 hitters and they are not producing or extending rallies. Yeah, Fielder struck out twice today, but he also got on base twice today with a single and a double and did not score. Delmon Young was today's star knocking in three runs.

Infante and Fielder hooked up for the game winning error as routine DP ball yielded the tying and winning runs for the Sox as Infante threw low to non-scooping Fielder and instead of the Tigers ending the inning with a 4-3 lead, the Sox take 5-4 lead that was not relinquished. The worst part about watching the game was listening to Sox announcer Homer Hawk Harrelson ...:gaah:

Didn't realize Leyland was in the clubhouse at the end of the Valverde implosion, but that doesn't mean he didn't make the call to send him out there.

He went 15 consecutive save chances without blowing one. He went the entire 2011 season without blowing a save. How do you pick and choose when to use him? It's easy to say it after the fact.

We've had some really close losses over the past 30 days:
Here they are, starting with Aug 18th-
    2-3 (Orioles)
    5-7 (Orioles)
    1-2 (Angels)
    8-9 (Royals)
    0-1 (Royals)
    1-2 (Royals)
    2-3 (Indians)
    2-3 (Indians)
    2-3 (Angels)
    1-6 (Angels)
    2-3 (Angels)
    1-6 (White Sox)
    6-7 (Indians)
    4-5 (White Sox)

    14 losses in total
11 of them by 1 run
1 of them by 2 runs
2 of them by 5 runs

In 8 out of 14 losses, our pitching held the opposition to 3 runs or less.

I think I pointed that out earlier in the month when Leyland said that if "the Tigers could hold the opposition to 3 runs or less they would win".....the problem is all they needed to do is score 4 runs in all of those games especially during that 9 game stretch between Angels home game and that last road game in Anaheim.....and they would be 3 games up on the Sox instead of down 3.
If they don't win this thing, I am thinking it's time for Lloyd to get the boot and JL to probably bail on his own.

Prior to All Star PapaV was 16 of 19 save ops. with 4.11 era
After All Star 3.33 era and 15 of 17 save ops.
That's 5 games he cost us. Pretty good but not the perfect we need. Not mention the hits/walks surrendered giving us all grey hair.
1 out is all he's good for sometimes. Managers gotta sence these things.

Rivera has had over 70 blown saves in his career and he's the best of all time.

Valverde has the 4th highest save conversion percentage in MLB history. According to his percentage, he should blow 1 in 9 on average. That would equate to 4 blown saves on the year to maintain his 4th best ever standing. He's 1 over the limit and in danger of slipping into solo 5th place. Time to fire somebody!

    Reliever: Percentage, Save conversions
    M. Rivera: 89.3%, 602-674
    J. Nathan: 89.0%, 260-292
    J. Papelbon: 89.0%, 218-245
    J. Valverde: 88.8%, 239-269
    T. Hoffman: 88.8%, 601-677

Just don't trust him all the time.
Hey, do that math M.Rivera has almost twice as many save ops.

He gave me grey hair when he was perfect last year. I would have trusted him, but I am thinking that 3 nights in a row may have been just a tad bit too much...maybe Dotel was the guy to throw in there for this game...

We're 3 games behind the White Sox with only 16 games left.
We've lost 2 games to them in the standings during the last 10 games.
Leyland should be clearing things out....
