We are now 0.5 games out of first place and we have played 1 less game than the Sox. That means that we control our destiny on the 0.5 game. That is mathematically as close to first place as we can be without being there.

More good news- Chicago has Floyd (10-10) matched up against Weaver tomorrow (18-4). Could their 4 game loss streak stretch to 5?

We are going with Scherzer in the day and Smyly at night (skipping Porcello because he warmed up for the rain out).

    On Scherzer...
Detroit Tigers' Max Scherzer cleared to start Sunday; Drew Smyly will pitch nightcap of doubleheader | MLive.com

It's all Minny and KC from here on out for us. Sox have 1 more against the Angels and also have to contend with the Rays.

Come on Tigers! Stay healthy and avoid the boots.

On a side note, Cabrera now sits on the triple crown with a tie in HR department with Josh Hamilton (who is out with a sinus infection that is blurring his vision).

Has any team ever had back to back MVPs that were different players? The Yankees or Red Sox would be the obvious places to look.

    Edit:
I'm going to answer my own question here after looking it up

In order from most recent to oldest:

    AL
Texas (Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez)
Milwaukee (Robin Yount and Rollie Fingers)
    Yankees (Maris x2, Mantle, Howard)
    Yankees (Berra x 2, Mantle x 2)
    Yankees (Rizutto and Berra)
    Yankees (DiMagio, Gordon, and Chandler)
    Tigers (Cochrane, Greenberg)!!!!
    Philly (Grove, Foxx)

    NL
Giants (Kent and Bonds x 2)
    Reds (Morgan and Foster)
    Reds (Bench and Rose)
    Cardinals (Cepeda and Gibson)
    LA (Wills and Koufax)
    Brooklyn (Campanella and Newcombe)

Guess its not that unusual. Baseball has a long history.
    Cardinals (Cooper, Musial, Marion)
    Reds (Lombardi, Walters, McCormick)

iI cracked my screen ! seeing M. C. get the MVP is about 10% of winning the division.

It is exciting to see Cabrera in the lead for the Triple Crown. For him to have 42 HRs and playing in cavernous Comerica Park. It's just great. Not sure how many dingers he has at home.

Wow, Chisox lose AGAIN. Thank you, Angels. No hits for Trout either. Couldn't have worked out better. After a horrible first game today, Tigers can tie for the lead with a win tonight. I don't have much confidence in Smyly and Leyland has some tired arms in the bullpen. Hoping for the best tonight. Might have to put up a lot of runs.

    Valverde! @#$%

Going to have to take it back in the bottom of the 10th with the weak side of our lineup.

Bottom of the lineup did next-to-nothing tonight. Team better get hot soon or this thing is going to be over. As much as I criticize Leyland, he's not out there committing errors and swinging at air.

Looking at the schedules for both the Chisox and Tigers, looks like Chicago has the easier end of it unless the Rays play unbelievable. White Sox are good at home and the Indians stink.

I am famous for quoting myself....one of those I told you so moments......if we struggled to beat the Twins at home, how do you think we will do in Minnesota next week??? Well before we go there we got to get by another pesky Royals team......

What should have been a half game lead tonight has all Tiger fans scratching their heads tonight wondering if the Tigers are worthy of even participating in the post season?? Does not appear that we can get through a game without a couple bonehead plays or errors that a playoff team would avoid..... game 1....Dirks with two critical blunders that open the door for the go ahead run. Pitcher Villareal neglecting to tag a man out at home and just stepping on the plate thinking it was aforce out...that led to the eventual winning run.

Game two, an almost certain DP goes awry when Avila throws the ball over Fielder to allow the tying run. Then of course last years fireman of the year disappoints the fans, his manager, his team mates and most importantly Oldschool HQ who has been bashing him in his Facebook sports column for the past two weeks.

No blame on Leyland here in today's sweep, but if they fail to get into the post season with all of the chances they have had....there has to be couple of fall guys in October and both are older than 50.....

OK I recant my last statement and say that maybe we can blame Leyland a little bit.....Why bring in Valverde in another non-save situation? :bs: After stellar performances by both Albuquerque and Benoit, maybe Dotel should have brought in...................

I didn't get coverage here... why was Smyly pulled so early? Looked like he had a good thing going.

What was the report on Scherzer? Looked like he got off to a really solid start.

Smyly hadn't thrown that many pitches in a long time. He was losing it and hitters generally figure a guy out the 2nd and 3rd times around the order. He had the bases loaded with only 1 out in the 5th inning when he was pulled. Alburqurque came in and got the first batter to hit a double play ball. Unfortunately, when Avila went to throw the relay to first base, the runner slid into his feet and the ball sailed into right field.

The Tiger pitchers gave up one earned run in 10 innings. The real problem with Sunday's double debacle was the lack of run production. Let's hope the Tiger hitters wake up REAL SOON!

It's tough on the pen when you have a doubleheader and both starters come out early.

Real bummer yesterday. The Sox sure are doing their part.

Sale and Verlander both going out today.

Saturday they scored 8 runs and only needed one for the victory. It's was old cliche to a little Dre, but as my mother use to tell me when I first started following the Tigers in the early sixties....they should have saved some of those runs for the next game....

If the bats can get fours runs today and JV should get the W....

We still got problems on defense, but the issue on offense is speed on the base paths. When Jackson and Berry get on base, the batters need to be patient at the plate and allow those guys the opportunity to steal second. Yeah, Miggy leads the MLB in RBI, but he also leads league grounding into DP.

The Tigers grounded into 2 DP's in the latter innings after getting the lead man on base as Young and Avila ended the threats.

9 outs to go and Cleveland leads the Sox.

Breaking News!! Papa Grande pitches in a non save opportunity and sets the Royals down in order...the last two on strikeouts...

Verlander strikes out 8 and gives up 9 hits and 2 runs and no BB's over 8 innings. The bats did their job as they banged out 13 hits on 6 runs as bottom part of the lineup even contributed. No MVP points earned for Miggy today as Hamilton knocked in his 43rd dinger of the season to regain the HR lead there. But right now it is all about getting in the post season baby!!, and TEAM Tigers did their part....just have to hope that the Indians can hold on to their slim lead and knockoff the ChiSux tonight..

Why is it the White Sox win when they have to, to maintain a tie or lead and the Tigers play just well enough to stay within striking distance??

Adam Dunn hits two homers (40th and 41st) and knocks in four runs when his team needs it, including a three run homer in the bottom of the 8th to lead the Sox to a come from behind victory.

Nine games to go and we are still fighting from behind.....:nailbiting:
