Nice come back win by the Tigers as it appears that they got inspired by what was happening a few blocks away at the Joe and won it the old fashion way with key base hits. Papa don't preach Grande...shuts the Twins big guns in the ninth striking out the last two. Tigers win first game of projected 4 game sweep as the Twins have now lost nine in a row.

I am baffled by managers that are letting their pitchers actually pitch to Miguel.

putting a guy on base intentionally in front of fielder and crew 5 times a game isn't so great either.

Sanchez comes within 2 outs of a no-no as Joe Mauer breaks it up with a one out single in the ninth. Other than Mauer's spoiler hit, Sanchez struckout the side on his way to 13 strikeout game and the Tigers blanked the Twins 6-0.

I went to the movie tonight to see FF6 and missed the game, but when I came out of theater, I checked my phone and it was showed that a no hitter was in progress with one out.....by the time I got to the car to turn the game on, Joe had spoiled it so me and Mrs Dre listen why Sanchez struck out the last two batters.

The wife could not understand the significance of the feat and why I was disappointed in the one hitter until she heard the Tiger announcer indicate that Sanchez would have been only the Tigers 6th pitcher in history to record a no hitter.

The Tigers move back into first place with the win as the Indians lose to the BoSox tonight.

I been looking at the 2 graphs and they seem to follow each other ?! Now wouldn't you think if average runs per game is 4.97 then ERA should be 4.97 ?

Ok with this years team statisticlly as good as the '84 team, I say this team eclipse the '84 team ! I every way.

I agree this year's team could be better than the '84 team. It can't eclipse the 35-5 start that the '84 team got off to, though.

ERA stands for Earned Run Average. In addition to earned runs, there are unearned runs. That is why the number of runs scored will always be greater than the number of earned runs scored.

Bases loaded walk ends up being the winning run.

Peralta on fire this month. Batting .400.

Miggy strikes out 3 times, but gets walked and ends up scoring a run.

    We're stacked.

If Porcello finds some mojo, it would be helpful. He's shown some flashes, but isn't that close to putting it all together any time soon it doesn't seem like. Smyly's stats have been way better, but he's only pitching 1 inning as a time with favorable match ups on the margin.

Pretty nice issue in that it's hard to rank our pitchers right now. Sanchez has been the best so far, but Verlander is clearly the thoroughbred, and Scherzer can't lose a game.

Was just looking a little closer at the '13 vs '84 team comparisons:

    '84/'13

    Offense:

    Batting average-
    .271/ .284

    On base percentage-
    .341/ .352

    Slugging percentage-
    .432/ .435

    Pitching:

    ERA-
    3.49/ 3.75

    Batting average against-
    .246/ .241

    On base percentage against-
    .309/ .304

    Slugging percentage against-
    .366/ .360

The 1984 team was the best offensively and defensively (runs allowed) in all of baseball. Our current team is the best in offense and although our stats are great, we don't rank that close to the top in runs allowed. If you look at the '84 team vs this one, all of our major pitching stats are better this year, except that ERA is MUCH worse. I haven't looked very deeply, but the mystery here is how we can give up a quarter of a run more per game this year while having better overall averages against in batting, getting on base, and slugging?

    What am I missing?

Our ERA is much worse now than in '84 (3.75 vs 3.49). I just can't figure out how that can be since other teams hit worse against this '13 team in average, OBP, and SLG.
