Can VMart still catch?..Probably can squat with that bum limb...
motorcitybengals has an interesting article about how it could be better to bolster our setup men/ bullpen and shift Benoit to closer than to overspend to buy a closer.

I always find their analysis convincing.
I question Benoit's mental makeup. He only has 17 saves in his career including 4 this season. He hasn't had much success closing in his career.
If a guy works 1 0r 2 innings how many days rest does he need ?
I trust no one in the bull pen, or in Toledo, so I hope they are looking to trade for someone during the break to see if that person is the one who can be relied on to give the keys to in the ninth inning drive us home. If we don't have that in the post season, then they will wind up as they did last year...getting only far enough to break our hearts in the end.
41-32 is a good enough for first place in a weak division, but with a decent bullpen, that record of 5-13 could be or should have been more like 13-5 which would have put us at a more respectable 49-27 and a comfortable 10 game division lead and no real worries other than making sure we tweak the line up so that they don't go cold like they did in San Fran last October..
I still see somebody getting hot in our division to challenge us.......could be scary.

I wonder if TaS had anything to do with the article
Tigers ace Verlander vows return to top of his game - morningjournal.com
Max Scherzer the favorite to win American League Cy Young Award - MLB - ESPN
Time to trade Verlander for a top closer.............
If he works easy innings (~10 pitches per outing), he can go almost every day. If he has a taxing inning (25+ pitches), he usually takes the next day off.
What's scary bad is that Cleveland lost 8 games in row in early June and are still only 3 .5 games back. .. They rebounded by winning nine of their last twelve and what once was a 5 game lead has shrunk...and they are leading in Baltimore tonight while we are struggling with the Angels...
Note to JL if we have to play Angels in post season.....be sure that Porcello does not pitch.....16 runs and 19 hits in five innings pitched this season vs Angels. Also leave Downs in the bullpen the rest of this series as he is getting banged up more than Porcello.
This all started when the "relief "catcher Bryan Holaday couldn't field a throw at the plate from right fielder Hunter where the runner would have been out by two feet and the game would have been 4-2 instead of 9-2............
14-8 ...ouch.....six errors and just plain bad pitching on a night where every Tiger fan in America and even at the ballpark prayed for rain in the middle of the fifth inning.
The Tigers went into the bottom of the ninth inning needing a TD and FG to win it and all they got was the FG and it was not enough to offset the Angels TD and two point conversion that they got in the 5th inning. The Angels batted around twice >>once in the 5th and then again in the 8th innings.
The Angels found seeing balls that eluded infielders and a had a couple that shot right back by Porcello up the middle.
Errors by the infielders, outfielders, relief pitchers, catchers....it was just bad out there....
A game that they will have to forget
Despite winning the weekend series vs the BoSox 3-1, Fister, Verlander and Porcello have looked shaky in each of their last two starts. They haven't looked good since Anibel Sanchez left..... Verlander needs to get off the snide tomorrow and stop the Angel roll and get back his mojo.
Whoa, that was some serious data that dude was working with. Average distance of batted balls is something I wouldn't have expected anybody to keep track of.
And yeah, we really need Verlander to be ace like at some point again.
That should start tomorrow, but please make sure he is not dressed to play on All Star night. It's Scherzers night to shine,,
Beer, Justin could pitch everyday.
The plot thickens: Avila says he won’t spend too much time on DL - Daily Tribune
Time to get daddy involved?
Nice to hear Leyland saying what all of Tigers nation are feeling. Avila cannot freakin' hit a baseball right now.
