Verlander was not emotionally prepared for long term success.
All his issues are between his ears.
What exactly do you mean by "long term success"? He is 134-73 over the last 8 seasons with a 3.45 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 1,586 strikeouts. He has struggled in a few outings this year, but he has been one of, if not, the most dominant pitcher in the game over the last 8 seasons.
He's toiled quietly in Detroit for most of that time. Only during his MVP season did he become a national sensation. The prospect of long term success under those conditions made him go soft.
You're trying to invent a narrative where one doesn't exist.
Except for 2008 (11-17, 4.84) His WHIP that year was better than this season's WHIP.
I wouldn't be surprised if Verlander is the best Tiger for the remainder of 2013.
I thought he became a sensation his rookie or second year when he and KRogers went to the SB
I don't even remember 11-17 !.

Wouldn't surprise me either. What do you think his 2013 record will look like?
Well, he is 10-8 right now. You figure he will get another 12 starts over the next 58 Tiger games. I say he goes 8-2 with 2 no decisions before we head into the playoffs.
So, his 2013 record will look like 18-10.
I'd like that...I'm gonna say 16-12.....

Wow! Avila with a grand slam off Strasburg to give Tigers 5-1 lead in the 6th. Sanchez has been very good on the mound matching Strasburg until the 6th.
Sanchez lowered his ERA while we just bumped Straus over 3.0. Veras with a perfect debut. Just adding one more Smyly/Benoit type guy like this will go a long way I hope.
Raburn knocks in the winning run for Cleveland tonight. Think he's having any fun in another uniform in the Central? With Giambi getting a pinch HR the other night, Francona is making all the right moves right now, it seems. I hope it doesn't last much longer. Cleveland is high up on the list of teams I despise.
They are rolling unfortunately.
