Raburn does have mini-streaks once in a while. He is lucky to be playing in the bigs after batting .171 last season.

The Tigers are 8-1 over their last 9, but still can't get any separation (2.5 GB) from those pesky Indians.

It is annoying. We're winning and are 15 games over .500 and only 2.5 ahead of Tribe. In addition, KC won 7 straight and they are only 7 back.

Looks like Tigers are getting ready to say good-bye to Peralta:

The Boston Red Sox have an agreement in place to acquire former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy in a three-team deal with the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers, sources confirmed to ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes.

The trade is pending the review of medical records and could be announced Wednesday, according to ESPN and multiple media reports.

Boston will send infielder Jose Iglesias to Detroit, while the White Sox will acquire outfielder Avisail Garcia from the Tigers, sources told Edes.

This guy has 97 games, 15 walks, 21 RBIs, and 4 stolen bases in his entire career. He's basically a rookie.

Seems like total insurance rather than a replacement.

Management must be furious with Peralta since he just cost them one of the top minor league prospects due to his cheating.

One report has us losing Bryan Villareal, too.

Iglesias was red hot earlier this season (hence, the addition to my fantasy team). He has cooled off recently (4 for his last 40).

I absolutely hate that they give up Garcia. And inside the division as well so that he can beat up on us for years.

Red Sox fans are hating that Iglesias got traded. This dude will be winning Gold Gloves at SS for a long time. If he can hit a little bit, he will be special.

Peralta is careering it from the plate, but his range is notoriously poor at SS. There are some stats that show that the Det pitchers are pitching better than their results, which would indicate poor defensive range (as it isn't reflected in the error rates).

If Iglesias can hit over .250, he may be a net boost for us overall (WAG on that one). It's about the most important defensive position. With Porcello being a sinker ball pitcher, you'd expect the replacement to benefit him the most.

I think the key is not playing the guy all the time. He leads the Indians in slugging (.544) and is second in OPS (.914) but has only played 61 games. Francona has handled him right. He actually had some decent years for us in '09 and '10. But, yes, very streaky.

I still can't believe the Tigers went out and got Jose Iglesias. Dave Dombrowski is a big-time GM.

We definitely need to enjoy this while it lasts (Dombrowski backed by Illitch). For a team in a crumbling market, we are an exception.

That WAS a great move by Dombrowski. Peralta is going to be a free agent so we might not have him in the future anyway. Perhaps his stupidity (Biogenesis) is a reason to part with him. DD saw a future need and filled it.

I guess now that I have had some time to think about it all, it's not all that bad. Even though I really like Garcia, he hasn't shown any plate discipline throughout his minor league career. Castellanos has a bigger upside and I agree that if Iglesias can hit above .250 he'd be a great addition to the team.

It's so hard to win a WS with the Yanks, Red Sox, and now teams like the Dodgers spending bazillions. I can't argue with any decision that places winning now over long term sustainability. Our opportunity doesn't get any better than right now (with the reining triple crown winner, a half dozen guys batting .300, and some of the best pitchers in the league).

1984 was 29 years ago. On average, teams can only win once every 30 years. We are due.

It is tough. And, in this particular trade we got a youngster with a potential for a youngster with a potential. Except the one we got fills the urgent need and the other one is in the stacked field.

TaS would you sacrifice WS appearances for repeated P/O caliber teams ?
Kinda like the Braves there for a while.

Did anyone see JV pitch today? I hate to nitpick (but I will anyway), but 5 walks in six innings is too many.

4 hits in 6 innings is solid though. Verlander really needed an easy one like this.

    What was up with Cabrera?

    Some encouraging performances:
Avila with 3HR and 19RBI in July
Martinez BA up to .274 with 60RBI
Hunter 7HR and 22RBI in July

    Some disconcerting performances:
Verlander in July opponents batting average .265 with 17BB and 24K
Jackson batting .223 with 2HR and 7RBI in July
Fielder batting .228 with 4HR and 14RBI in July (now batting .262 for the season)
Dirks batting .248 with 7HR and 25RBI for the season
