We have many guys on the team already that might step up big into that closer role. Would be wise to hang onto Porcello until we can determine our needs with more clarity. If a starting pitcher gets injured, it will be great to have an extra starter. Dotel, Benoit, Coke, Albequerque, and Rondon could all vie for the closing spot. If Porcello wins the 5th spot in the rotation, then Smyly is also a part of the pen. Closers come and go like fireflies in the night. Going out and nabbing a guy that made his reputation in the last 2-3 years in that role might not be smart.
The only problem is keeping the 6th starter stretched out so that in a pinch can jump back into a starting role... but its a problem I think all teams would deal with.
Brennan Boesch released today. The Tigers couldn't even find anyone to trade for him. It was a good move. There is no room for him. The Tigers are contending for a World Series and they can't waste major league at bats on a young guy trying to find himself. By waiving him now, it gives Boesch more time to hook up with another team. Nice move by Dombrowski.
I read something like- we only had to pay him 1/6th of his salary. If we waited, it would have risen to 1/4th of his salary.
Well, when the guy is making $2.3 million: * You pay $383,000 to get rid of him now. * You pay $575,000 if you hold onto him for a few more days.
The Yankees signed Boesch to a 1-year $1.5 million deal. The Bronx Bombers have lots of injuries so maybe Boesch will get a shot.
Great article on Porcello (hoping it's not fluff to pump up his trade value). Detroit Tigers should hang on to pitcher Rick Porcello - MLB News | FOX Sports on MSN This gives me hope though:
