Especially if we let them beat up on us this weekend. Need to shut them down by taking 2 of 3 and put away their hopes of getting the wild Card and extend our division lead so that we can rest Fielder , Miggy, Torri and AJ.

KC could be problematic in a short series. They have good pitching. 5th overall in ERA in majors.

I worry about winning too early, and then resting and loosing the timing. As happened last year
when the Tigers won their way into the World Series quickly, had a long lay-off and then were completely flat
    when the series started.
Sure, Cabrera needs to rest his body, but too much can be bad. He's in a slump now, but maybe that's good as he can
break out of it just in time for the playoffs.
    Nothing is guaranteed!!

There is some truth to that theory. By keeping the race close, the Tigers are making these final games meaningful and perhaps staying more sharp as the playoffs approach.

On the other hand, the Tigers are banged up and could use some rest....especially Miggy and Iglesias.

The question is, "how much time off is necessary to heal your body sufficiently?"

Miggy may need a month and Iglesias may need two weeks. In either case, that's more
time off than the team can afford, and their remaining sharp would allow.
So, "play on." But take a few breaks. :-)

Actually, there may be more time off DURING the playoffs as the schedule may vary
quite a bit. But the games are quite intense and draining. But these guys all love to compete.

I don't think the whole team needs the long rest as that killed them last year WS and in the 2006 WS.

Just need to rest those guys maybe every other game off that last week..which is realistically maybe a total of 2 games off for the key contributors during the last last 8. The problem is that the magic # is only 11 with sixteen games left. It would be nice if they could clinch with about 6 left and then try operating rest-me-coach.

Miggy needs to get his timing back..so he needs to play at least the next 10 games........no extra base hits in the last 10 straight games. He is stuck on 43 in the HR dept and during those ten games, the HR leader Chris Davis has only hit two, so looks like the injury has probably taken the back to back triple crown from Miggy. No big deal....he needs another WS ring, not another triple crown trophy.

Depending on how they play the Royals this weekend, the Tigers will know if facing them in the post season will be an issue. Pitching for the Tigers has been great the past two games. They just need to get that long ball going again once they get back to Comerica.

What would be your order of pitchers to trot out in a 5 game playoff series, with the understanding that only 1 guy will get 2 starts?

    H/H/R/R/H

    Scherzer/Sanchez/Verlander/Fister/Scherzer?

Sanchez has the lowest ERA in the AL by a pretty wide margin.

Long-ball teams tend to suffer power outages in big games. Tigers have to score runs in different ways. With Iglesias, there might be an opportunity.

I think Verlander has to stay in the top 3. He will get it figured out soon....hopefully....

Leyland could not pinch hit for any the Tigers anemic bats, but two things he will be second guessed on.....I may have had Pena up their batting for Avila in the 7th and then Nick running for Prince in the ninth.... Pena always seems to come through in the "pinch" and Nick has not proven himself in the majors yet.... As soon as the Indians put up seven out there on the out a town scoreboard, the Tiger bats should have woken up.....But another one run loss to the Royals and the 10 time the Tigers league leading offense has been shut out.

So the magic # stays at 10.

Tigers have lost 7 of 9 one-run games vs. Kansas City. Hopefully, Smokes fesses up and takes the blame on this one. Even Mario and Ron knew he should have pinch-run for Fielder.

With September call-ups, you have a boatload of players at your disposal. Hernan Perez should have pinch ran for Prince. Leyland blew this one.

You kind of hate it when managers play for extra innings and refuse to pinch run for a player because you want him to be available in extra frames that never materialize. .

And yes Bill I concur that JL blew this one as we have to assume that a fleet footed Perez would have beaten the tag more so than rollie pollie Fielder. On the other hand you know the 3rd base coach had to send Fielder, because he may have been stranded there and we would wondering why he wasn't waved home?

Despite our semi all-star starting pitching, Fister and Verlander have been victimized by lack of run support and CY candidate Scherzer has failed to get to 20 the last three games and two of those games were because of the Tigers failure to get the necessary runs.

The catcher was smart to get off to the side with Fielder coming at him. I've always thought that it would be fun to see him lay a hit.

Just saw the stat on ESPN's highlights that the Royals bullpen has an ERA .5 better than the next closest team, which is a massive lead. This probably goes a long way to explain the 1 run losses to them. When they have any lead, they are good at closing it out.

Starting to think Darvish is the CY front-runner despite the 9 losses.
