And Martinez catching.
Can someone go out and find the 2011's American League MVP? WE need him for the post season. The guy who is wearing #35 looks to be our 5th best starting pitcher and should only be used for spot pitching if he can't win tonight or his next two outings...
He isn't pitching great, but this is still a quality start. Team has to score some runs. The offense isn't exactly "peaking" right now.
A statistic I would be interested in is number of pitches thrown by each team this season. Seems like the Tiger pitchers -- particularly Verlander -- aren't very efficient. Just checked: Tigers staff is tops in pitches (tied with ChiSox) per plate appearance at 3.94
We're down 7-0...I think I hear the fat lady singing.
Cabrera didn't reach base for only about the 5th time all year. Pretty good job by SEA to limit our lineup to 4 scattered hits. CLE is 3 outs from dropping another one.
No run support for JV..>>his team mates must be jealous of his paycheck or him getting busy with Kate Upton. Tigers were shutout 11 times this year...Justin was the victim in four of those shut out losses. The Tigers lost eleven games this year where JV started and the team failed to score more than 3 runs. As far as the hot pitchers in the rotation..since the All star break pitcher W-L ERA Starts Sanchez 7-1 2.03 12 Porcello 7-2 3.93 11 Scherzer 6-2 2.51 11 Fister 5-4 3.11 11 Verlander 3-6 3.92 12 Benoit 2-1 2.45 13 out of 13 SV Once again I plead with JL to leave Coke off the playoff roster...that way he won't be looking to bring him him.
Pretty impressive all around!
Some stats to ponder . The Tigers are 3-9 since the break in games that has JV has started and 14-18 for the season for the 32 games he started. The bullpen couldn't save us in those games either as they were 1-6 trying to finish off his starts. There is no way he will be left out of the rotation, but at the same time, he should be no better than the 3rd man in the rotation. The question is, who gets bullpen duty, Fister or Porcello?
Fister has started 22 games this year where he has allowed 3 runs or fewer. 26 starts with 2 or fewer walks. 20 starts without a HR allowed. In his last 5 playoff games for us, he has allowed 6 earned runs in 31.2 innings (1.71 ERA). Leyland has what you might call an upper class problem here. He'll go with Fister over Porcello as he should. Way more consistency with similar potential for greatness on any given night. I agree with you on Coke, but I get the feeling like he's fore sure going to be on the playoff roster and will sure be inserted at some point to get a lefty out (and will instead give up a double). The sad part is that lefties are hitting better than righties against him this year (.297 vs .261). JV better rise to the occasion in October! I can imagine it happening.
In addition to the Indians losing and reducing the Tigers magic number to 5, the Oakland A's our probable ALDS opponent lost too and we are only a game behind them in getting home field advantage. They own the tie breaker having beaten the Tigers 4-3, so that is why all of these remaining games are important in terms of overtaking them.
If it comes down to Coke vs. Alvarez on the playoff roster, JL will go with the experienced guy.
What about Valverde ? What if he sneaks into the club house !
Please don't even joke about that...
Nice comeback win by the Tigers. Once again Fielder tries to out run a ball hit to the outfield from first base and this time scores the winning run, despite replays showing he was probably tagged out at the plate on the face. We will take the win and it drops our magic # to 4. Hopefully they clinch this weekend vs the Chisox at home. Since the Indians are playing a triple A team in Houston...the Tigers will need to take care of business themselves. No Verlander this weekend, so we should be able to sweep....
Will be nice if we can get Rondon back and pitching decently by the post season. It's funny how this year was supposed to be dominated by our murder's row of Cabrera/ Prince/ and VMart. They've all be good and even great, but haven't yet been firing on all cylinders. Cabrera was strong all year long while Prince was sub par and Martinez was horrible. Then VMart surged while Prince went into a depression. Suddenly, Cabrera slumps due to his banged up status and Prince catches fire. So, now, we have 2 out of 3 peaking. If we can give Cabrera some rest after we clinch, we might finally see what sort of destruction these 3 in a row can cause. Might even generate enough run support to get Verlander a post season W!
Some more stats to ponder. Despite winning the last three series and maintaining a 6.5 game lead, the Tigers are 9-8 for September?? They have won 7 of 9 to make up for the horrid September start. The two losses in those last nine games, we were shut out...which means we won all 7 games where we scored at least one run.. During the nine game stretch, Porcello has 2 W's and Benoit has 5 saves and Cabrera has one dinger. Post seasons awards. By mid August it was a forgone conclusion that Scherzer would be Cy Young Award winner and Miggy would win his second straight MVP and would pass Chris Davis in homers to win his second straight triple crown. Stop the presses....Miggy went from August 26 to Sept 17th without a home run and so far Scherzer has not won a game since August 24th. We all know that Max had the best run support of all the pitchers, but with Miggy battling injuries, we have to concede that Max's failure in his quest to get 20 has been tied to Miggy's injury. Max was pitching well enough to win, but the that key long ball whether it was a homer or double was missing and Miggy league leading RBI production had come to a halt. (Chris Davis has now tied him and is poised to take over two thirds of the triple crown. Watching the MLB everyday, there are guys there who now indicate there are other pitchers that could win the CYA..(like the guy who shut down the Tigers last night and Yu Darvish). Two more regular season starts for Max....tomorrow at vs the ChiSox and next Wednesday at the Twins....question ??? Does he and the Tigers need to win both games for him to lock up the CYA?
20-2 or 20-3 you can't touch that
What if Max gets shelled in those 2 games and finishes 19-5? No one else will hit 20 W's in the AL unless the Angels's C J Wilson pitches tonight and twice next week in relief etc.
