"Money grubbers" is the operative phrase here. It took me a while to get used to the Wild Card. They had to do that once they went to three divisions. I just don't think you need the extra team now. But if you're going to have five teams, at least give the Wild Card matchup a three-game series and also go back to the 154-game season. That'll save a week.

HERE is ONE reason why it matters. My brother flew down from Detrot to spend some time with me at the game since I live in North Carolina. For any professional baseball team that accepts MONEY from PAYING fans who just MIGHT BE traveling to see them for the ONLY time all year to say that the game MEANT NOTHING to them is the reason why this world is in the pitiful state it is in now. AND the more people that accepts it as 'The norm" CREATES more athletes and management that will TREAT it as such.

I pity anyone who doesn't respect the game.......

The "sudden" lack of offense isn't a new problem. It has been this way, for this team, for *years.* In addition to being shut out 12 times (*12!*) this season, the Tigers had 64 games this year when they scored 3 runs or less (so few runs that, if the Tigers lost, the majority of the blame would go to the offense). There were 18 games in which they scored 4 runs (where a loss might be reasonably assigned to either the pitching or the offense), and 80 games (less than half) when the offense produced 5 runs or more (enough that, if the Tigers lost one of those games, it was mostly on the pitching). The record in those games:

3 runs or less scored: 14-50 (5 of these wins came during the 12 game win streak)
    4 runs scored: 10-8.
5 runs or more scored: 69-11........

POSTED by Phil Micheals in Detroit News....great perspective of reality. Hope the rest of you realize it.

Have to agree with my fellow technician here.
Same thing happen when I went to see the Pistons play the Clippers about 6 years ago ...(when the Pistons were relevant), and Billups didn't play and all of the Pistons fans at the Staples center wearing #1 jerseys were disappointed.

It also happen two years ago when I thought I was going to CP3 for the first time and there he was sitting on the bench in street clothes. It was a game time decision so I understand, but me and the fans were disappointed as we came to see CP3. I understand when a team wants to rest some players for post season etc, but the scrubs have to put forth an effort....

When a team treats a game as meaningless, then the ticket prices should drop and those who paid premium for front row seats to see the scrubs play 75% of the game, should get a rebate or discount food and beer vouchers.

Good stats that hopefully the Tigers players and coaches are reviewing.

The team was first in the majors in hits and batting average, and second in runs.....They were also last in stolen bases and 4th in grounding into DP's and 21st in sacrifice bunts/hits.

I don't have the stats where the Tigers were when comes to LOB or runners left in scoring position, but I am sure it is top 3.

Lets hope we are aggressive on the bases as much as the A's are (despite the slowness of are big three). They also have to be patient at the plate....like our opponents, who tend to sit on pitches in order for out starting pitcher pitch count to be up near 100 by the 6th or 7th inning. Then they get to our bullpen and the game is balance as we sweat it out hoping we can hang on. If you saw tonights game, the Rays manager rode David Price all the way to the end despite 118 pitches. We know JL would have put his starter in the 7th or 8th and took a chance with a set up man and closer......but that is the way he rolls.

The Tigers were under .500 from 1994-2005.

Just 10 years ago, we lost 119 games.

We're top 2 in runs per game, hits per game, RBIs per game, batting average, slugging%, on-base%, strikeouts per 9 innings, strikeouts per walk, we just won our division, and I'm hearing complaints about the last game of the season and LOB stats? Really?

3,083,397 fans came to see the Tigers play this season. I believe that's a single season record. Fans seem happy.

Our runs to lob ratio is better than the american league average. it's natural that we have a lot of both due to our incredibly high on base percentage. gotta put guys on base if you want a chance at knocking them in.

Austin Jackson was encouraged to attempt fewer steals this year because of the fire power behind him. Did that strategy work? he scored a ton.

Austin seems slow on the bases this year. He still seems like a gazelle in centerfield but doesn't get down the first base line like he once used to.

I understand your point. We have a team that contends every season now. I'm happy about that. But I'd like to see an end to the 29-year title drought. I'm willing to bet Illitch gets my point.

    Picky, Picky.

Team scores too many runs when it wins, too few when it loses.
Cabrera on one leg for a month and a half. Can't run.
V Mart on a gimpy knee all year. Can't run.
Peralta can't field, but can hit.
Iglesias can't hit, but can field.
AJ is fast enough in the field, too slow on the bases.

I wonder if you ever asked your wife (spouse) to make a list of your good points, and shortcomings?
Would you make the World Series? Or First Base? Or ....

If the A's whip us in the first rnd, what will be our synopsis ?
Leyland didn't groom the team for the hussle effort the A's thrive on.
The offense is one dimensional and can't manufacture runs.
starting pitching can only take you so far.
Bullpen rounded into shape too late.
We spent too much time coddling Valverde, with out reward.
At least make sure he isn't hiding in the clubhouse.

it's easier to dominate in bball than baseball. in baseball, the top four teams right now all have pretty equal odds, which means less than 25% for each. if we lose, it doesn't necessarily mean that we couldn't have won. tiger woods lost many more majors than here won, even in his prime, yet he was always the favorite.

the a's are not looking past us, that's for sure.

9:37 start on Friday night for the Tigers. I guess I need to take a nap earlier in the day.

Delmon Young just homered for Tampa. Interesting how Tigers didn't like his defensive play, but are OK with Jhonny in the outfield just to get his bat into the lineup.
