The highest scoring team in the league Red Sox poured it on after the sloppy play by the Rays. Can the second highest team Tigers keep up with the Sox, better yet outscore the A's and put fear in the rest of the post season participants? Sock it to em Tigers:beer:

3 runs in the first hold up, Scherzer fans 11, Benoit strikes out the side in the ninth >>>> Tigers win 3-2

    Tiger pitchers fan 16 A's.......

It's up to the Tiger batters to come up with 5 runs tomorrow to give JV some support.

My scenario had Verlander in the bullpen.
Let's see if HE can put the As on the ropes in this series.

Cabrera does not appear able to use much of his lower body to hit. His swing is all hands. The TBS guys last night did some good analysis on what the groin injury has done to him. The other hitters in the lineup will need to make up for this. Great pitching performances last night.

Some scenarios had Verlander being the No. 1 guy. This is a good compromise.

Not if the As get 4 or more runs off of him. Then it becomes a stupid mistake.
I'm prepared to eat crow if he gives up 2 runs or less in 7 innings.

16 K's matches the A's franchise single game high... that's how good it was. Benoit striking out the side in the high pressure 9th was amazing. Not your '12 closer, that's for sure. All in all, our bullpen struck out 5 out of 6 batters faced to end the game.

And we start the playoffs with a 3 hitter.

Miggy doesn't need to go yard every at bat. He can be very effective just putting the ball in play.
I wonder if he knows how to not go yard ?

It's never a stupid idea to have your Cy Young / MVP / 6-time All-Star / $20 million star pitcher to actually pitch. I guarantee no one in the Detroit franchise even remotely considered putting Verlander in the bullpen.

By putting Verlander at the #2 spot, Leyland actually gave himself two choices (Scherzer, Verlander) for a game #5 starter. After last night, it's pretty obvious who gets the call if we end up going 5 games.

The 1 spot is the only one that really matters in a 5 game series.

In a 7 game series, here is how our current rotation shakes out:

    G1: Scherzer
    G2: Verlander
    G3: Sanchez
    G4: Fister
    G5: Scherzer
    G6: Verlander
    G7: Sanchez

So, we'd get our big 3 in twice a piece and we'd have the AL ERA leader closing a series for us with Scherzer/Verlander/Sanchez pitching in realistic elimination or close out games.

By moving Verlander ahead of Sanchez, we actually save Sanchez for the biggest pressure games of all.

Pitching looks awesome as we thought it would.....just need to convert all of those hits into runs, which means someone other than Miggy will have to go yard (with a man on)...One run can win games, but I only relax on 4+ run leads.

Verlander hasn't earned his money.......I'd start the ERA champion in game 2 over Verlander.

I am OK with going with JV in game 2, but if we had lost game 1, then I would have considered Sanchez ahead of JV.:nailbiting:

But our hitters got to manufacture those 5+ runs to offset the issues outlined in blue.

This may work...having Verlander pitch game 2.
I'd rather be safe picking our starting pitching.
We've been to close to winning it all, but have nothing to show for it.

Last year, Verlander pitched game #1 and game #5 against Oakland in the ALDS. Result: 16 innings, 1 ER, 2 victories.

Kelly for Dirks is the only change in the lineup for game #2:

    Jackson CF
    Hunter RF
    Cabrera 3B
    Fielder 1B
    Martinez DH
    Avila C
    Infante 2B
    Kelly LF
    Iglesias SS
    Verlander P
