Yeah definitely the bats need some consistency...8 hits today and no runs?? I didn't see today's game, but this team should never be shut out based on their fire power.

Even in Saturday's game they were stranding runners on base and even after they pushed across 4 runs in the fifth, you weren't sure if the bullpen could hold, and was 5 runs enough? All those runners LOB could come back to haunt us.... The next inning they gave up 3 and just like that it was nail biter.

6 games into the MLB season and every team has at least 1 W and 1 L. It was also the case after only 5 games (can tell by the W and L streaks compared to the records).

    Everybody is bunched still.

    week one in review:

_HITTING: Lots of potential. Bench will be better with a trade for a veteran outfielder or the two kids at Toledo prove ready. Hunter is worth the money as his two out hits give Cabrera and Fielder more at bats. Victor will hit better as it gets warmer. Avila looks healthy and swinging well. Jackson keeps getting better-Hunter will teach him so much.
    GRADE: B

-PITCHING: Starters will be who we thought they were. I want Sanchez in the 2 spot and maybe trade Fister instead of Porcello ,if need be. Bullpen is a mess and veteran long man is needed. Plus, they all need a specific roll. WE DO need a closer.
    GRADE: C

MANAGING: Nothing much to change in week one. Leyland has to work with what he has and hope his starters go deep in games.
    GRADE: B-

Todays game...7 runs on 15 hits....today's stat of the day....Peralta stranded 8 runners... Miggy hits his first dinger in game 7? Torii Hunter gets his 2000th hit and Tiger fans give him a standing O.

Today's closer Benoit gives up a HR and a double in the 9th, but all is good in the 7-3 win.

Tigers top four batters all hitting over 300, along with Infante at the bottom of the line up.....

He's right, if the offense would do its job and score 20 runs a game, the bullpen would be fine.

This offense was built to outscore the opposition and if they can't win games where they score six runs, then we are in trouble. The Tiger announcer was blaming the pitching woes on cold weather? You mean the starters can deal with it, but bullpen can't?

Its the setup men who have really failed us with their inconsistency. .....Villareal walks three straight batters and had the last two batters sitting on a 1-2 count before letting them off the hook. Who do you trust Smyly, Downs Villareal, Albuquerque, Dotel, Benoit or Coke? Me? none of them...

    4-4 now on two blown games.....should be at least 8-0....ok I mean 6-2. :ner-ner:

Those 10-15 hits they are getting need to be converted into more runs if our starters can't get pass 5 innings and the bullpen can't pitch a shout out in the next four. Yesterday Peralta stranded 8 base runners and today Avila has stranded six and Martinez four. Guess the cold weather is affecting them too.

Martinez, Dirks and Avila are having a hard time at the plate....I know it's early but none of them are hitting their weight yet.

You can't expect to win if you don't score more than 2 runs. The first 3 losses fall into this category. Today, the pitching sucked. Porcello gave up 4 runs in 5 innings, so only 1/2 of the blame goes to the bullpen.

    Losses have been:
    3-2 @ Minnesota
    8-2 @ Minnesota
    7-0 vs Yankees
    8-6 vs Toronto

Like I said, the Tigers should be 6-2 with only the 8-2 and 7-0 losses as the only blemish in the L column.

Porcello fell apart in the sixth inning. I was hoping that the bullpen could hold and we could tack on another insurance run or two stave off any bullpen failures, but our worst fears were materialized when Villareal could not find the strike zone and it open the flood gates for the winning runs.
The bats then cooled off and Fielder, VMart and Dirks went down without a whimper in the 9th.

Just noticed that the Tigers haven't made an error yet in 9 games. Especially impressive when you consider that they've been playing in the north with a cold spring.

Hitting- Jackson, Hunter, Cabrera, Fielder, and Infante on hot. This will be murderers row when and if VMart starts clicking.

Even thought we've blown 4 games, we have still passed 3 teams in our division already. Let's hope that we can build a comfortable lead in a month or two and then start experimenting with some call ups and the bullpen/ closer to find a diamond in the rough.

Team batting average is .313........A hot start overall. 20 points higher than any other team.
Home runs so far are 5............6th from the bottom of the majors.
We're 9th in RBIs though, which need to improve with our shaky bullpen.
An ERA of .442 with a WHIP of 1.40 is not setting the world on fire though.
Those pitching #s remind me of Thee's fantasy team last year. :)

Villareal strikes again....first the 3 walks on Wednesday and then the HR pitch tonight.

Can't blame it all on him though

If these games only ran 5 innings, the Tigers would be 10-0.

The starting pitching is good for 5 or 6 innings and then either they or the bullpen collapses

The hitters are getting hits, but can't push across enough runs to save themselves from a suspect bullpen and I am speculating they probably lead the league in runners left on base.

Fielder is a having a MVP type season on a .500 team................

Our starters will be pushed longer soon and some of these problems should be minimized with the bullpen. We do have some relievers doing good work.
