Agreed. Avila should be the backup at this point.
not fighting you on that
" END OF MONTH REVIEW: RECORD: W-14 L-9 TEAM AVG: .272 (IST IN AL) TEAM ERA: 3.49 ((4TH IN AL) CRAZY STAT: Tigers lead AL in runners caught stealing with 9 ANALYSIS: HITTING- Tigers have yet to really find their niche but the aggressive running game that was promised has been very evident. As the weather gets warmer, I expect too see more steals and chances taken. The batting leads the AL and no one except for Davis has been above expectations. Can't wait for June thru August to take over but I still feel a power bat from a fading team (see Arizona, Florida or Toronto) will be ready for the taking. PITCHING: Starters have been good but the pitch count has to be addressed. Maybe if baseball implemented my famous "Only 3 foul balls per at-bat Act of 1979" we'd see more complete games again. As bad as the bullpen has been when it's bad, it's been very good when it's good. I guess we just have to take until someone wises up and puts Smyly back in there. TIGER MVPS: 1. KINSLER 2, DAVIS 3. CASTELLANOS TIGER CYS: 1. SCHERZER 2. VERLANDER 3. CHAMBERLAIN Overall, Tigers have played under expectations and the same of a good team and manger is to win games in spite of . A bad weather schedule leads to unbalanced starts and keeping hitters from getting in a rhythm. Yet, Tigers ,despite a west coast swing, are in 1st place and should walk away from the rest of the pack.
I saw an analysis last year that quantified what the tigers were missing by not stealing bases... it was surprisingly little. And so far this year, we're proving that even trying can be costly. Gotta have the speed and there needs to be open bases in front of the speed. With the top ba in the al, getting caught stealing is especially damaging. Not saying it won't get better, but pointing out that the new philosophy is harder to execute than to talk about (for ausmus).
Just saw espn's factoid that zach grienke has allowed two runs or less in 18 straight starts... the longest streak since 1900. I'm impressed by that.
We've caught 9 guys stealing. Best defensive stat. Gonna check that. Looks like we are tied for 7th with about 5 other teams with 20 SBs
detroittiger.com says 8 times CS with 4 teams CS more we've given up 22 SBs and are tied for 2sd with 9 runners CS 23 games vs several teams with 29 games completed.
You have to love Dombrowski. Bullpen is struggling and he goes out and does something about it. Reports: Tigers sign reliever Joel Hanrahan | The Detroit News
Very proactive indeed.
won't be available til mid June
I missed that part. :(
3 hits and 0 walks by porcello today. He's got talent.
You gotta give Dombrowski credit. If the Tigs don't bring home a crown before Illitch leaves this world, it won't be because DD didn't try hard enough.
Scherzer pitches twice this week at home..........
You mean, like in his own back yard?
.640 if Leyland was coaching we'd be hovering around .510
That's 104 win pace. If smyly is for real and everyone stays healthy, that might actually be sustainable, even with a weak pen.
Interesting start to the year so far. I had no prediction for the Tigers this season. With a new manager and some important new pieces, I just wondered how they would jell. Maybe Dombrowski can hire the next Piston's coach.
