Sounds like he needs to stop getting behind hitters because they can wait on his now mediocre fastball. I would send him to Toledo. I know they'll never do that. But if he has a problem to work out, that's where he should do it and not in important games. This is what the minor leagues are for. Besides, his ego could use a little downsizing.

    He'd be a decent closer.

I thought that the way Anibal was getting no run support, he would be a great one to come in the 8th inning and close out the last two innings and secure the win. Pitching two innings every other game could solve our late inning collapses....but now we have a hard time getting runs for any pitcher. Since it takes awhile for JV to get it going, I would not trust him in a closer role.

Verlander has not been able to overpower opposing batters with his fastball the way he used to, as he’s allowed a .307 batting average with his fastball this season, all the way up from .215 in his Cy Young campaign in 2011.

Over the past six seasons, Verlander has lost a lot of life off his fastball. In 2009, Verlander’s average fastball velocity was 95.6 mph, second-best in the majors and best in the American League. This season, he’s down to 92.6 mph, which is outside of the top 25 qualified pitchers in MLB.-------from ESPN.com

I think Verlander has the correct take on his troubles. He says he isn't keeping the ball down. All his pitches are up
in the strike zone. Yes, his speed is down, but his control is the major problem. He has all sorts of pitches but he
can't keep any of them around knee level. Every time he gets one up, it gets hit, hard. If he can straighten out his mechanics
and get his pitches located properly, he'll be fine.

Does JV still hang out with Kate Upton? His stamina, strength and concentration could be drained by her? :caked: She is a major distraction IMO.

She just sits there and smiles....

Scherzer just gave up 7 runs in the 2nd inning.

On the bright side, at least the Tigers won't get fatigued from All-Star game activities (except Miggy will probably get voted in) this year.

    Scherzer made a bad decision.

OK so I got off the plane in Denver tonight and checked my phone for a Tigers update. The score board says 11-4 bottom of the ninth. So I oh figure ESPN app is still reporting last night's game...so I waited for it to refresh and when the Royals 11 runs failed to disappear. .I knew it was deja vu and we had been embarrassed on national tv.
Was hoping we could run the table in first place wire to wire ala the 84 Bless you Boys. ..but that won't happen now.

The Royals are what we hope to become by October. ....If young Brad can figure out how to manage a perennial play off team to a world series championship.

Royals are hot right now. It's not a surprise that they passed Los Tigres. Tigers are still the better team from top to bottom -- once they get it together. Regarding Scherzer's performance last night: I don't know how someone can go from a complete-game shutout to giving up 10 earned runs the next time out. I realize it was two different teams, but it still makes little sense to me.

I read Woody's comment above and I'm not as certain as he is that Verlander will be fine, but JV has plenty of time to figure it out. Ausmus will give him a plenty long leash. I thought once JV did so well in the playoffs last season that he had things figured out for this season. One thing's for sure: JV is like a box of chocolates. At this point, you never know what you're gonna get.

Maybe scherzer was overextended from his last outing? Frustrating year so far from our pitchers except for sanchez.
