I am old and old school..:bow1:. Just not feeling Smyly as a starter at least in a normal rotation. Let's find another guy and put him in long relief...

Rick Porcello.....should we jink him and say potential CYA winner?

Back to back complete game shut outs .(over the Rangers and A's), and 25 straight shut out innings. No strikeouts or base on balls by Rick tonight as he gave up 4 hits and had the A's bounce into 17 groundouts. The ninth inning was consisted of 3 fly outs on 7 pitches and he finished with just 96 pitches.

An 11-4 record is good enough to represent the Tigers in the all star game along with Scherzer, Miggy, and both Martinez guys.

Not sure JD will get there but he deserves to. He's locked in.

Porcello's work this season has made me forget all the crappy outings he had when he was even younger than the young he is now

JD has 10 dingers and 34 RBI in 144 AB and 34 games.

If you expand that out to playing every day since game one, it would translate out to about 19 hr ad 60 RBI.....those are almost all star break numbers when you look at Miggy & VMart' current stats. If he tears it up over the next week, he could be the leading candidate for the last minute internet fan vote ....if they are still doing it this year.

Heard the Tigs swept the series on my way home from work.

Except for opening day, I despise day games during the work week

I am normally on top of the day games since I work at home, but was so busy today, I didn't realize they had played until it popped up in Facebook that they had won 9-3. Looks like we still have their number....just have to hope that we play them in the ALCS and get back to the WS....

Think Porcello can push Max like Max pushed Justin last year ?
We need to rethink our win totals for Porcello.

    TIGERS OLDSKOOLHQ MID-SEASON REPORT:

    1. START 27-12
    2. BLAH 9-20
    3, SINCE THE BLAH 11-2
    RECORD 47-34
THIS team IS exactly WHAT WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!!
if every part of the team: hitting , pitching and defense is not working on all cylinders, this is a very average team...BUT when three particular players are doing their job (JACKSON, HUNTER & VERLANDER) THIS becomes the best team in baseball. In spite of a somewhat interesting first half, its important to note that:

    - TIGERS LEAD AL IN BATTING AVERAGE, DOUBLES,SLUGGING AND OPS
Thats considering that only Victor Martinez has been consistent from day one to day 81 all year

    - IAN KINSLER HAS MADE A LAUGHING STOCK OUT OF PRINCE FIELDER
The guy is hard work 24-7-365 and is the kind of dirt ball that could have hadus looking at our third straight WORLD sERIES if we got him two years ago

    - NICK CASTELLANOS AND EUGENIO SUAREZ HAS SAVED THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR INFIELD
Of all qualified rookies not including that Cuban guy in Chicago, suarez is 2nd and Casty is 6th in the Al in hitting. Suarez is everything three other SS in Detroit this year was not. Casty leads in doubles and is 2nd in RBI( Cuban rookies arent rookies)

LOOK AT THE FIRST HALF STATS OF LAST YEARS TEAM COMPARED TO THIS YEARS TEAM (even though Miggy trumps himself, you can compare Fielder to Catellanos....)

From The Detroit News: Tigers back in the groove at midseason mark | The Detroit News

    - the PITCHING HAS NOT BEEN HALF AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED but they are hitting their stride with 4 straight superb starts from Porcello, Sanchez, Verlander and Scherzer. And watch out for these new triplets in the bullpen SMITH, HARDY and McCOY. COKE is relaxing into a good one inning pitcher, AL B has a 35/9 k/walk ratio, CHAMBERLAIN HAS BEEN BULLPEN MVP and NATHAN has broken our hearts but will be there in September and be smoking.

    overall grade: B

The base stealing is over 300% higher than last year, but some of the aggressiveness on the base paths have led to players running through stop signs and getting thrown out at the plate.

Last night's win over Rays is exactly the team you will see in the playoffs. Scherzer will be dominant as Game 1 and 4 starter, I'd go Sanchez at 2 and 6, Verlander at 3 and 7(where his ego always comes to the top) and Porcello at 4 and relief with Smyly,Chamberlain and Nathan ready to close. I think Al B, Hanarhan and Coke's experience will send the triplets back to AAA. This team was built for October so dont be suprised at another mini swoon coming out of the AllStar break, a great august and a mediocre September as the pitchers lower their pitch counts. Three keys to possible trades:

    1. Is J D M for real?? He has more spunk than Tuiassosopo but we will see come late August how the league adjusts to him. (.285, 18 Hr's and 70 RBI) is good enough for me
    2. Is Nathan ready to go? I think he has another speed to kick into come September and the trade options out there dont impress me.
    3. The Clubhouse trumps the rookie manager? I believe our vets like Hunter, Nathan, Cabrera and JV will make life easier on the new skipper and keep the guys focused on the real prize-Getting Mr I's name on that WS trophy!

If the starting pitching remains consistent the way it is now until the end of the season, then I would consider giving Porcello one of the starting nods in the post season with Sanchez coming on as the long or short relief, just because Anibal never gives up any runs until he tires out. the 7th and 8th innings would be perfect as long as Max, Rick and JV pitch well into the 6th or 7th with a nice lead.

We still got a half a season to go and Porcello could well lead the team in W's or ERA when all is said and done. He may not habe the post season experience but if he is a CYA candidate come playoff time, he needs to be starting at least game 2.

As you can see by today's game, you can't win them all with Smyly pitching..............

That's what I said about the entire season..He's an X factor other teams would love to have...
With our fab Four, you could put anybody in the 5th slot from the minors every two months to get some seasoning.....
