First let me say I wonder how many people gave Miami a chance last year. Second who except a true fan gave us a chance in 04'. Third, ready...... 2006-07 champions [sign]WELCOME[/sign] [sign]TO[/sign] [sign]DETROIT[/sign] [sign]CITY[/sign]

I thought Miami might was a threat to win it all last year.

I thought the Pistons would win the championship in 2004.

There are at least 5 teams better than us in the West. No championship. We don't even have the right coach for a championship yet.

I guess this question is kind of a sytax thing.

Do I think the Pistons have a chance? Yes.

Are they favored? No they would not be favored at this time.

If you could guarantee that nobody would get tired and Sheed would never get into foul trouble then the Pistons can potentially beat any team out there. Is it going to happen? It has not for the past 2 post-seasons so we will see.

The expanded bench is a reason for me to hope that things will be different this time.

    Must have really been late...

    This should read..

After Miami's free agent acquisitions I sincerely thought Miami was a threat to win it all last year. Riley returning as coach solidified that belief.

I only remember one person choosing Miami to win it all last year in our contest. Am I correct here?

    Now, who was that person???

I didn't bet against our team because I thought it was bad mojo. I did however win the overall prediction contest...so take that how you want.

By AllStar break we should have 4 again. Can I get an Amen!
Now what's this about we not having a chance?

The Stack for Rip trade was Dumars' best move, IMO. Getting Sheed for peanuts was a coup, but both Dumars and Jordan thought they were getting more talent than they were giving, which wasn't the case with the Sheed trade.

Chasing Billups and Ben with MLE deals were also good indications of what Joe's capable of.

Cro, your post in the Orlando thread would fit well here. JD doesn't bite hard on the superstar hype. The Sheed deal should have cost much more. Maybe JD saw the handwriting on the wall and cut Darko because it would have hamstrung his budget for years. He and everybody else knows not having that #2 pick talent makes you want to hang yourself.
...So JD still has to prove his style works, will it be just conference finals for the next 10 years, without that superstar, or can we luck out and see some more finals action?
...I'm almost resigned to strong regular seasons and a punking by the leagues superstar, active.

``JD doesn't bite hard on the superstar hype.''

We won with the non-star system because Joe couldn't get a star, and it's a mistake to assume Joe doesn't want one. He tried for Iverson, threw the max at Tim Thomas (thank god he missed), and has said he'd prefer to build around a star if he could find one. Thomas aside, there's a few pieces of evidence out there that shows his definition of a star is just a little more stringent than most GMs'.

IMO it's pretty clear that the best way to win is to find that star, the guy that's hungry every year, a few more core types, then continually change up the guys playing around them. You can find Antoine Walkers and Gary Paytons and James Poseys every year -- guys that you can harness and ride for a year, then jettison if they get lazy.

Then he should have built around a 7 foot athletic #2 pick.

Hopefully he'll just build around a 7-foot athletic #56 pick.
