I like BoT better than Prince. That is the only endorsement I can give at this stage.
Darko was young and kept his mouth shut. He whined a little bit about "vanting tu ply" but other than that, he sat on the end of the bench stoic and indifferent (his indifference is my primary beef with him actually). The fact that he was 18 and European also led to a lot of fans cutting him some slack. This Pistons were also winning so there wasn't a lot of pressure on him. I often forgot that Darko was even on the team when he was in Detroit. BoT represented a somewhat sizable FA signing for the Pistons and most people feel that he's done absolutely nothing to earn his money. He's been with the Pistons through some of their worst years in a long time and for many, he's the "face of futillity". In the same way that we refer to that point in the 90's as the "Teal" years, perhaps we can look back on recent times as the "Turd" years. Charlie uses his twitter feed to tweet pics of himself planking, going to baseball games/nightclubs, traveling, etc. As a fan, I've always been under the impression that nobody on the Pistons is having more fun than Charlie. I think a lot of people feel that Charlie hasn't earned the right to have fun. I think that people either want him to play up to his contract or shut up, collect his money and wait patiently until his deal expires. The thing that irks me about him lately is this whole "Sauna Cycling"/"Boxing workout" thing and the fact that he has to let the world know every time he does a freaking sit-up. We get it, you feel embarrased that John Calipari called you a fatso and cut you from the mighty Dominican Republic squad. You should feel embarrassed you jackass! We don't need to see sweaty pics of you getting your "gym flow" on. You have to admit, he's pretty defensive for a guy who has no idea what 'defense' is.
This assessment of Tayshaun Prince was right-on. You sir, shoud be the beat writer covering the Pistons and providing expert analysis!
It wasn't like Ben Gordon had a ton of fans in Detroit either but he did have his body of work with the Bulls to at least make people wonder that maybe the Pistons were the problem. There was no denying that he was a force in Chicago no matter how many 16 minute 0-5 nights he had here. Chuckles can't get the basic concepts of don't front the other teams player out to half court when he's trying to post up, don't use a 2 handed shove to the back or a wild karate chop as your main defensive strategies that would allow him to be a Ryan Anderson type guy off the bench. His hoop IQ is so low that you can't cover for him or hide him on D. I can't tell if he is uber soft or uber dumb, but those qualities matched with his delusional tough guy persona makes him very dislikable. I would have been very excited had the Pistons drafted CCG but where we sit today I would take Darko on my team every single time. I could post pictures of myself nightly where I am covered in sweat after a workout and I'm a 42 year old working father of 2 kids ages 5 and 3.
I didn't get to see the game so thanks to all ya'll for posting your observations. Shout out to BDL, this was golden. In the highlights Monroe dumps a pass to BK or someone and there were two guys curling to the basket at the same time. That's awesome. Movement. I like Frank's offensive sets WAY more than pass it around for a jump shot then stack your team with jump shooters.
This. Seriously. And him advertising all that crap that much only made me want him gone sooner. Great post BDL. Side note: Tay sort of looks like a fossil running around out there with all these young players.
It makes me so happy to read something like this, how long as it been since we had such a presence in the post..
My favorite player during the Going to Work era was Ben Wallace. Going back to the years with Cliff Robinson, Mikki Moore,Eric Montross and the Alternatorz, Ben Wallace was the centerpiece of a scrappy, hard working team that played for 48 minutes every night. They excelled at the little things, like playing great team defense, making the extra pass, setting solid picks and good screens. To me, Charlie Villaneuva is the polar opposite of that team, and signals the true end of an era. He plays weak defense, and when he does try, it's completely ineffective. He takes lousy shots. He puts his heart into his tweets instead of his game. He chucks up shots. I probably hate the guy (as a player) a little more than he deserves, but if I had to sum up what I dislike about the NBA in one player, it would Charlie.
Can someone please post a picture of Tommy G from this game? I understand he looked amazing.
I couldn't find one from when they showed him dancing with Hooper (Hooper btw looks much more athletic this year). When TG and Hoop were bustin' moves, he reminded me of the classic "drunk uncle" that shows up to every wedding that you've ever been to and puts on a clinic on the dance floor. Here's a shot of Tom rocking some acid washed bell-bottoms paired with my 4-year-old son's Piston polo shirt.
My thoughts: It took me about 45 seconds to start longing for a substitution. Impressive debut by Dre. I think the ally ops in the beginning helped him alot. Did anyone else notice the jumper he threw at the basket in the second quarter when the ref had blown the whistle? The ball was never above the rim and it was a couple of yards wide. JJ provided some nice energy. I was skeptic to him as a 3 but after seeing him in the swedish national team and watching him run the offense I'm starting to come around to the idea. Not because it's impressive to average 5 assists against a bunch of scrubs but it showed that he's not as one-dimensional as his 0.3 APG shows. The regular stuff from Monroe, Max, Prince and Stuck. Monroe is good, Max bores me, Prince bores me even more and Stuck is Stuck. BK looks ripped! Chaz. I don't recall who wrote it but I much rather see Maggette than Tay on the floor. And I'm not that keen on watching Bad Porn. Impressive show by Gores. Ken? TRG? Flynn? Pippa? Sunshine? T-Broke? I guess those guys will play tonight and I'm excited to watch them but I bet the regular season games will look like the one tonight from a line up standpoint...
I'm guessing that LF would rather play guys normal minutes in the 2nd game and sit players from game 1 out than just try to squeeze everybody in each game. That makes sense is that turns out to be his philosophy.
My quick takeaways: Happy to see just 10/11 players a night as long as we see the whole squad. Really liked the fast tempo at the start, but it was mostly gone after the first quarter. BK: bigger and better! Monroe: tried to force it too much - just like when I use him in 2K13 Drummond: Solid. Looked really lost a few times on offence but to be expected. already has more "plays of the day" than most of the Pistons roster Stuckey: also solid. BK and him should cause some havoc as BK gets better - that double split to the basket and feed from Drum was beautiful to watch JJ: real good - getting his own through his hustle Max: solid - say what you will, but defends well and manages to hit those wide open shots when it ends up with him even though he gets limited opportunity. Magette: will be handy of the bench for bit minutes BoT: looked more active but still full of sh... Prince: played his role Bynum: more feeds less dribble like this game is good. Love the full court hustle
I think so too and I like this strategy. I just believe the rotations in the regular season will be alot more like the first preseason game than the second so I was a bit disappointed about not seeing Ken and TRG on the floor. I hope they impress tonight.
GAME 2 of the Pistons/Raptors Home and Home Series is tonight at 7pm. It's on Fox Sports Detroit for me, which probably means similar TV availability for you non-Michigan cats as Wednesday.
Loved hearing Special-K call Stuckey a "bowling ball" after he knocked two defenders to the floor on one of his drives at the end of the 3rd. Some people like highlight dunks... Some people like buzzer beater threes... I like watching a dude snag a defensive rebound and then beat everyone down back down the floor to receive a pass for an easy hoop. Dennis Rodman used to do this 3-4 times a game. Jonas did it at least twice against Toronto.
NBAtv tonight I believe... hope it's true. Looking forward to seeing Flynn and Slava do their imitation of WB and Drum.
If the Pistons have a starting lineup that includes Stuckey, Maxiel, and Prince, I will predict there will be NO PLAYOFFS this year. These guys are bad. It's nice that Maxiel and Prince played the ENTIRE 3rd quarter. We need to figure out what these guys can contribute.
I am watching it right now Bill...you are correct these guys are dreadful...Seems like I am looking at last years team. All three of these guys should be coming off the bench, but that would mean starting Bynum........ They are down 58-54 at the end of 3.....
The 4th quarter will at least be interesting to watch. We've got: PG-Bynum SG-Williams F - Singler F - Daye C - Russian dude Williams looks pretty fast taking guys off the dribble and then dishing. Daye looks more muscular. Must have been doing lots of push-ups. All he is doing, though, is fouling people and whining to the refs.
