Is the Western Conference REALLY that much better than the Eastern Conference? Or is it bias towards the "Left Coast"????

It exists. I have always disliked the West. And the Milwaukee Bucks.

The majority of big time, whatever that means, East coast sports writers are based in New York or Boston (ESPN). I think the fact that the Celtics and Knicks are not very good, has some kind of subliminal affect on these writers attitude about the Eastern Conference in general. If the Celtics and Knicks were top notch playoff teams I think there were be less bias against the Eastern Conference in the main stream basketball media.

According to the games played as of this date, the West has won more games against the East, but it was not as far apart as I would have believed.

According to my quick scan, the West has won 243 of the 428 games played, interconference, for .567 percent. The East has won 185 of the 428 for a winnning percent of .432.

I did not check relative scores, just wins and losses against each other.

Not a huge difference, but seems notworthy.

Budda is right. With the Celtics and Knicks down, the bias lives....in the press.

Here's how I would look at it. In head-to-head competition, the West has 58 more wins than the East. That is 31% more wins! Very significant.

For comparison, the Bulls have 31% more wins than the Magic. So, the West is like the Bulls and the East is like the Magic. Who is better? Da Bulls da Bulls da Bulls da Bulls.

The difference is also about the same for Utah/or Houston compared to Golden State.

Admit it, the Pistons have an easy path to the Finals. If we were in the West, we'd be sweatin it.

Except that the Magic has beaten them 2 out of 3 this season.

    Who can tell?

Try taking out Dallas Phoenix and San Antonio and you get West 176 up and 168 down and East of course just the reverse. Dallas Phoenix and San Antonio are 67-17 against the East or .798. In their own conference they are 88 - 30 or .745. A difference to be sure but not as big as people make is seem.

So yes the West is better than the East, but that is due to 3 out of the 15 teams in the West, which happen to be the top three teams in the league, notwithstanding the Pistons. LOL The other 12 teams or 80% of the teams in the West are on par with the East.

That is because they don't have to play themselves. If they did, they would theoretically go .500 against themselves and they would be .720 in the West compared to .798 against the East.

That winning % difference would be like winning 65.4 games in an 82 game season vs. winning only 59.

Here's another way to look at the West vs. the East.

If you add up the point differentials of all the teams in the West, you get +18.7 points.

If you do the same for the East, you get -13.7 points.

Anybody notice yesterday on ABC the Heat/ Pistons game was like the JV game of the day? That`s all they were talking about was the Suns/Mavs game.

Every commercial break, during timeouts, all day long. I`m gald the Heat/Pistons game turned out to be the better of the two games.

Furthermore, I hope whoever from the EC makes it to the Finals kicks the Western Conf aaaaarrrrsesesss!!!!!

Re: Western Conf Bias???...it's more interesting

The East has some law and order but the Wild Wild West you better not slip.
Celts , Pistons and Magic divison winners with Cavs and Raptors respectable but forget seeds 6-8 please.
Now the West, look at the standings [www.nba.com]. The one and two seeds have changed biweekly the last 3 weeks and there's been 4 different teams trying to hold the pole position.
    I'll go :
    GD Lakers
    Hornets
    Purrs
    Rockets
    Mavs
And you'll need a tie breaker to determine all 5 seeds !
Who's willing to put a fork in the Suns ? :]

I think part of the perception comes from the fact that some teams in the West who have winning records will not make the playoffs and some teams in the East with losing records will make the playoffs.

And due to the fact East teams play West teams during the regular season, the West must be better than the East.

Don't know if that is right or not, but that is the perception. I also believe that the perception has been there for a while, even before NY and Boston were down.

It is similar to past years when the Big Ten and the Pac Ten were playing in the Rose Bowl to cap their seasons. I was in the Corps in CA during the years that the Big Ten was coming out to the Rose Bowl every year and kicking Pac Ten @$$. But during those years, the western sports press continually talked about how the Pac Ten was so much better than the Big Ten.

Later on, the Pac Ten began kicking Big Ten @$$ every year.

Things change quickly; perceptions take a while longer.

There are always many ways to argue this point:

If you look at the top two teams in the NBA: Boston (50-12), Detroit (46-17).
    East is better.

If you look at the top 9 teams, 7 of them are from the West.
    West is better.

If you look at how many teams are .500 or better. Five in East, 10 in West.
    West is better.

If you look at the 4 worst teams in the NBA, 3 are from the West (Seattle 16-47, Memphis 15-47, Minnesota 14-48).
    East is better.

The thing that is amazing to me this year in the West is; you could win 50 games and just be an eighth seed!!!

    That sucks!!!!!!!!
