Joe Dumars has made many moves in his 7 years as the Pistons general manager. Obviously, some have been good and some have been not so good. I ranked what I thought were his top 15 moves.
    • Which moves have I missed?
    • Which ones don't belong on this list?
    • Which moves were ranked too high or too low?
    #15. 2004 - Signed Antonio McDyess
    #14. 2005 - Fired Larry Brown
#13. 2000 - Traded Christian Laettner and Terry Mills to Dallas
#12. 2000 - Traded Loy Vaught to Dallas
    #11. 2001 - Fired George Irvine
#10. 2003 - Drafted Carlos Delfino with 25th overall pick
#9. 2001 - Drafted Mehmet Okur with 38th overall pick
    #8. 2007 - Signed Chris Webber
#7. 2005 - Drafted Amir Johnson with 56th overall pick
#6. 2002 - Traded Jerry Stackhouse for Rip Hamilton
#5. 2002 - Drafted Tayshaun Prince with 23rd overall pick
#4. 2002 - Signed free agent Chauncey Billups
    #3. 2003 - Hired Larry Brown
    #2. 2004 - Traded for Rasheed Wallace
#1. 2000 - Traded Grant Hill for Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins

Honorable Mention: Signing Anthony Goldwire to a 10-day contract, waiving Gabe Muoneke, waiving Matt Fish, Signing Anthony Goldwire to a second 10-day contract, naming Dave Twardzik as an assistant coach.

I'd rank the Stack-Rip trade in the top three, along with the Sheed and Ben trades.

My #1 move is actually a combo move.

We traded Ronald Dupree to Minny for a second rounder, and then re-signed him when as a free agent. At one point, we had
    • The trade exception for the trade (salary marker for difference in salary value, pick is equal to $0). Much better IMO than taking back garbage filler.
    • The second round pick
    • Ronald Dupree
That's almost as good as trading Lindsey Hunter during the Sheed trade and getting him back in the same season to win a title.

Dupree = Making a fool out of Kevin McHale.
Hunter = This move prompted the NBA to close a trade loophole in the latest CBA. Bonus points for exploiting the system. :)

That was a pretty slick move, Roscoe, but best move Joe D ever made? Did that move significantly help the Pistons win a championship?

It is funny how Joe D trades guys away and then picks them back up. Lindsey Hunter, for example, could have his own list of transactions:

Aug 22, 2000 : traded Lindsey Hunter to the Bucks for Billy Owens
Aug 28, 2003 : traded Michael Curry to the Raptors for Lindsey Hunter
Feb 19, 2004 : traded Lindsey Hunter to the Celtics in Atlanta/Boston/Sheed deal
    Feb 26, 2004 : signed Lindsey Hunter
    Aug 13, 2004 : re-signed Lindsey Hunter
    Jul 18, 2006 : re-signed Lindsey Hunter

By your criteria, maybe you should include firing Carlisle.

My criteria was based purely on sneakiness, not success! :D

I believe the trade for Cliff Robinson for Jud Buechler and John Wallace in 2001 started the wheels in motion... this deal started the team moving in a playoff direction and set the table for other players interest in a new winning franchise.
Before this deal they were just a teal mess.

Excellent point. That was Ground Zero. Instead of hoarding his cap space to land one big free agent, Joe used it in trades to swap for better players. I believe he later traded Cliffy for Bob Sura's short contract, which ended up as part of the Sheed deal.

The Cleaves trade for Jon Barry and a Sacramento first-rounder is pretty amazing, too. Here's a full list.

All in all- still more good moves, for sure.
In the last 2 years- definetely the oppsite. His phenomenal reputation has taken many hits in that short period.

My Mantra has always been "Trust in Joe".

More often than not it has paid off.

The top moves are pretty obvious, Ben, Sheed, and CB. Picking Delfino and Amir were also pretty good moves.

But one of Joe's best moves was getting a first round pick and two scrubs for Rodney White. Without that move, we don't have the resources to sign Sheed.

1a. Sheed for nothing and your chicks for free, and getting Hunter Back
1b. Chucky and Ben for damaged goods.

    2b. Tay
    3. Chauncey FA
    4. Dyess FA
    5. Getting something out Mateen/HVC/Rodney White drafting gaffs.
    6. Amir (Yes I'm the biggest Amir fanboy on EARTH)

I liked the Corliss trade...getting him for Jerome Williams and Eric Montross. Then Corliss goes on to win the Sixth Man of the Year Award.

Drafting Tay was great although if Joe had gone in another direction we would probably have drafted Anthony over Darko.

Cleaves for Jon Barry was another favorite of mine.

Yeah the Corliss move (both getting and sending) was about as excellent as beating IMUS to death with a baseball bat, or in lay terms, it was exceptional.

Why wasn't it a good trade?

sCorliss was a very important part of the 02-03, and to a lesser extent the 03-04 playoff runs.

Would have been nice to keep JYD, but Montross was worthless.

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought this was the thread where we talk about his good moves. So, I took your statement literally.

We haven't won a title since Corliss, right? That's weird, cause it seems like so long ago.
