| Re: TIGERBEAT presented by Stroh's Tigers' Miller demoted to Lakeland Quote:
The Tigers on Thursday sent rookie left-hander Andrew Miller to their Lakeland, Fla., instructional camp in an attempt to re-align a 22-year-old prospect whose pitches and psyche had all gotten out of whack in recent starts.
The Tigers also recalled right-hander Virgil Vasquez from Triple-A Toledo. He will start Friday night's game against the Athletics in Oakland.
Additionally, the Tigers on Saturday will bring up Toledo pitchers Jose Capellan and Yorman Bazardo, as well as infielders Omar Infante and Mike Hessman. All have been with the Tigers at different times this season. Major league active rosters are permitted to expand on Sept. 1 from their customary 25-man limit.
Miller was 5-5 in 13 starts for the Tigers but had run into control problems in recent appearances. In Thursday night's 5-0 loss to the Royals, he lasted only two-thirds of an inning, allowing all five Royals runs.
"We rolled the dice, and it's obvious that he needs more time," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "I think Andrew Miller is going to be an outstanding pitcher in the Tigers rotation for a long time. When that happens, I don't know. But I think this kid will be a lights-out pitcher for a long time."
Vasquez, who has appeared in two earlier spot-start assignments for the Tigers, will replace Chad Durbin as Friday night's starter. Leyland's decision was based on the potential need for Durbin as a long reliever in the bullpen.
